Mike .. I view this as just another tool that will save me some frustration .. If I can master the CAD work, then there are some models I'd like to print --or at least just the sides . .for example ,  the CSX OCS cars .. new sides and some cores and I can build a train faster than I could scratch it .. and maybe more accurate ..

Or to double your rate of output. As you discovered, it takes a long time to render objects. I'm printing very small details where the platform moves less than half an inch for the full build, and it takes two or more hours. So a day when I'm printing takes some planning, and I'm thankful it provides an ETA. Not that I'm complaining, necessarily - I can't fault the results, having this tool is amazing - but if I were to undertake something "taller" like rolling stock, that's going to be an overnighter.

Thanks - that is good to know! My eye on these is to make coal hoppers that will never be mass produced, so maybe waiting will pay off with more capable machines (at similar price points).

I see Anycubic has the Photon listed at $259.

Is it worth owning one at any price if I have no CAD skills? SO far my attempts to learn on Thingverse and Sketchup have been miserable.

Have you tried starting small? That's been my strategy. 3D-capable CAD software is consistently non-intuitive to this career 2D graphic artist, but I'm managing to get my feet wet in 3D with small projects. If you've been following my layout thread this week with the searchlight signal project, gee, I've only had to throw my mouse at the screen only a dozen times or so. That's a big improvement.

Anyway, it's been productive, and I'm really happy I have the Photon after resisting it "ever since". But no locomotive shells or custom motor vehicle models in my foreseeable future, that's for certain.

What ever happened to the telegraph crossarms and insulators that were bandied about earlier?
I guess I don't recall seeing them installed by anyone and I think there could be some wide interest there.

It got lost. Mark (@Mark W) sent me his artwork with 8 insulators and I printed several hundred pallets of them. Then Mark redesigned them to have 10 insulators and I tried painting them with a lot of failures. He was going to rework the CAD and then he got busy with all the other stuff he was designing and he also started a new job. That was over 6 months ago and I've been too busy getting my layout ready for Prairie Rails invitational Ops to do any follow up on them.

Ah, OK.  Understandable.  Thank you Rodney.

I have some in the works but I'm not happy with the insulator profiles yet.  Should have the 3D models perfected and be printing them before the end of next month (today is 09/26/2019).  I'm developing the etched parts that go with them too.  They're designed directly from measurements taken from crossarms and insulators found alongside the UP double track mainline in Weber and Echo Canyons in Utah and will be printed in transparent green first, then we'll see if clear is "clear" enough.

These are "superdetailed" with bolt-heads and mounting hardware, with etched NS support arms.  First offering will be simple transition era insulators, with the possibility of later, more complex insulator arrangements.  However, ALL models will be designed from from measurements taken from actual prototype equipment and archival photos.

The printer has arrived, and I'm modifying my externally vented spraybooth to also suck resin fumes out of the painting/printing room before I start familiarizing myself with the printer.

Also working on the company name, packaging, pricing, webpage and other business crap with my partner.

Cheerio!

Saw this today ..

Anycubic WILL NOT go for water washable resin now

Dear Anycubic customers,
Quite a number of customers and social media followers were asking if Anycubic has a plan and would release water washable resin any time soon. We would like to respond to you all here🎙🎙🎙:

We are working diligently and trying hard to provide convenient and easier-to-use resin for the 3D community. We appreciate other brands making great efforts to benefit the 3D printer users too. However, Anycubic does not think it is the right time yet to produce water washable resin and will not release it any time soon.

The major reason is resin has to contain photon initiator and monomers which are harsh to ecosystem and water creatures when going down to the sewage. A resin printer is based on photon initialization and we don’t see this would go anytime soon. We know a water washable resin will save you time and mess, but we care for the earth we all live with just as you do.

Here below is a screenshot of a test report on resin’s effect on water and water creatures. It speaks for itself.

Sharing is caring. ❤️❤️

Thank you all for your interest and support all along the way.

All love,
Anycubic team

@John   Wow.  Good on them.

So 30 years ago when I was trained in Cali at 3D Systems on the SLA 500, the resin was so toxic (and caustic) that we had to operate, remove, clean and cure our prints in full-body mylar hazamat suits with full face masks and gloves! I can tell you that for the resins to become available for home use, they have come a long, long way.

As of end October 2019, the original Photon (Classic) has been discontinued.

Although no official announcements have been made, the Photons now being sold that look like the original Photons with steel bodies and yellow windows are in fact Photon-S variants. They share the same mainboards with the Photon-S and can only print proprietary *.pws files. These are Photons in look only, they are incompatible with the original Photons shipped between October 2017 to end September 2019.

This must be the reason behind the Photon S push.   Dang, I knew I should have grabbed one more classic during that clearance last month.

From what I've seen online, the Epax X1 is nearly an Anycubic Photon equivalent, just built a little better.  Same Chitu CBD-Tech motherboard as the Photon which means the same slicer options exist as opposed to the Photon-S proprietary one.
