Weekend Update 9/30/18

Backdrop painting has been keeping me busy the last few weeks.   Because northeastern British Columbia is so flat I had to use a very low horizon line.   I ended up spending more time painting the clouds than the fields

It feels like Fort St. John - Great clouds and backdrop - This pic from Dawson Creek, see the back hills...nice work.

Where are you gonna get the decals for that?

I rode on CZ's RS-3 4097 many times between the Second Lake reload and Ladysmith harbour when I worked for them back in the late 1970's.  That unit had high short hood.  Don't know what happened to it.  I think the "chop nose" unit came from another CZ coastal division.  It ended up in Port Alberni, I believe.

Still Vdubbin' 

Slowly putting all the little stuff back together. This car came with a bunch of new parts that were new in the 1990's. Some of them were OK and others were crap. New chrome bumpers still sealed in green plastic were starting to rust when I peeled back the plastic. I'm going with 1 year older bumpers anyways.

I painted all the interior metal you'd be able to see a dark green color to match my seats, door panels, and headliner. Still waiting the 6-8 weeks for all of that to show up since it's a "custom" color. Got the doors put back together, chrome, felt wipers, vent window, glass, regulators

Tried the stock hub caps with the stock wheels painted.

Yes the engine laying on the ground left a square burn mark in my yard 

Later I had to run out and get some chrome beauty rings


Can't put the front and back glass in till the headliner and I'm waiting on the headliner. I knew it would take a while to make, but I didn't order it till after I painted the car just in case I screwed it up. Seats are all stripped down and ready for new covers. Probably won't happen this year. Based on last year I only have about 20-25 days left before it gets too cold for me. So I'll be back to the trains

Very nice backdrop work; your layout is moving forward very quickly!  There are some unpainted backdrops here; bring your brushes and paints in November  .


Steve:

Nice work on the M-420s and the CZ RS-3.  You appear to have gone with a longitudinal fuel tank for it which is of interest to me as one of my three RS-3s will require the same tank.  I have been trying to decide exactly what to do there and how it will affect the Atlas/China mechanism with contact strips; may I ask what you are using and the impact on the mechanism?

This was a busy week for my layout with a visit from our local North Shore Modellers group on Wednesday, and op session #4 on Friday.  This was a fun session as all participants were fellow BCR modellers, and their passion for and knowledge of the railway was evident.  This session tested out a revision of the fast clock setting and hours run.

Philippe took his first turn as dispatcher, seen here dictating a Manual Block Clearance to Mike for the Dawson Creek Switcher:




Brian, who owns and operates a sizeable BCR layout in HO Scale (http://www.cwrailway.ca/), volunteered for Chetwynd Yard:




Mike, who is a Sikorsky helicopter technician, eases the Dawson Creek Switcher across the Pine River bridge:




Doug, who worked for the railway for many years as a radio technician, owns a BCR layout in HO Scale, and has helped many local modellers with projects on their layouts, brings Extra 581 North into Septimus:




The layout also experienced its first significant derailment which occurred as the Dawson Creek Switcher was leaving Dawson Creek on its return journey.  A trip pin on a boxcar got hung up on a switch and the train string lined on the curve at the entrance to the yard.  Three loaded chip cars fell onto their sides, and a bulldozer was tossed off a flat car.  The engines and the remainder of the train remained on the tracks.  I guess it is time to start the equipment inspection project!




With C-425 807 now in the paint shop, I have made a start on the next locomotives.  During the 1970s a number of CN MLW C-424 and C-630 locomotives were leased to the BCR.  i wanted to try and model an accurate MLW C-424 for an occasional appearance on the layout.  I have a picture of CN 3218 north of Prince George on the BCR so chose that one, and was able to find a Life-Like unit with that number, albeit in an older paint scheme.  Some clod at the factory glued the whole thing together so disassembly took a long time and some parts were damaged.  I still cannot remove the side handrails for fear of breaking them.  Here is the mechanism and the deck and cab with a replacement undecorated shell:




This model will require many significant alterations including re-profiling the front of the cab, removing the battery boxes, and changing the rear end.  I am hoping to be able to graft the rear end from an Atlas C-420 shell onto the Life-Like shell:




I have also decided to model two more M-630 locomotives:  a fourth conventional M-630, and an M-630W.  Here is a start on M-630 722 with Atlas C-630 mechanism, Atlas C-630 sill, Briggs M-630 shell, Atlas C-630 body, and Atlas C-630 cab.  I plan to graft the Atlas nose onto the Briggs body as done with my earlier ones:




Jeff's new MLW M-630W kit finally offers an opportunity to model one of these distinctive locomotives, which were unique to the BCR:

You know Chris, I'm not a fan of low-riders but this green bug is just so darn cute!  I like it!! I love the fact that it has stock wheels and hubcaps.  Very tastefully done!
