Smoky Mtn Logging Layout

I decided to start a new layout (like I need another one). I was prompted by the purchase of some used Bachmann Old Timer flat cars and two packs of Quality Craft log buggies. So, I need a logging railroad to run this stuff. I'm going with a simple circle with a siding and based the scenery as much as possible on logging in the Smoky Mountains before the National Park was created. So mid 1920’s. In past rummaging and research, I've found plenty of inspirational pictures from Western Carolina University’s digital heritage collection. Still working on a name…

That looks like a cool project and something that one can actually finish!  :)

Moving along quickly...

Track is down, feeders connected. I will soldier the joints after the glue dries. Just using the old school Atlas code 80 for this one.

Working on the mountain in the middle of the layout. Once the foam adhesive dries, I’ll sculpt it with the shur-foam shaper. Might even borrow a hot foam cutter. The spur side will be clear cut, mostly stumps and debri. The other side will feature a logging scene in a wooded area. Still haven't thought up a name...

More progress over the past week. Foam is attached and shaped, light-weight spackle to fill the gaps, rocks glued down, and now ready to paint. I cut out the middle under the mountain to reduce the weight and have a place to hide and additional wiring or boards for lights, sound, or whatever.

I like it. How are you continuing the contours into the flat base?
And if you're digging in much (you should), remember to reinforce the bottom.

Thanks! To be honest, I hadn't thought of digging into the base. I got wrapped up in making a mountain that had a more realistic slope. I'll give it a try and see what I come up with.

Thanks! They are Woodland Scenics molds. I adding some coloring to the plaster and then painted them after they cured.

Updates!

Work has been keeping me busy, but here's some more progress the past couple of weeks. Fist set of four images show painted track and foam. I dug out a few areas and cut in some ditches.

Next set of four images show ground foam, ballast, and dirt in place. I'll be adding more debris and scenery materials as I develop each area.

Update! It's been a while, the fall is a busy time of year for me. Hopefully I'll have more train time in the coming weeks.
