N Scale Fertilizer Plants

I could SWEAR I remember there being two similar but different models out at the time the Blair Line Farmers Fertilizer kit came out.

http://www.blairline.com/farmersfertilizer/

Am I losing my mind, or was there a second option?

I'm contemplating one for a future TTRAK model (the idea of an Alco S2 trundling along with some high-capacity cars for it is amusing to me).

And while I'm asking questions, are there any good photo references for these things?

it was one kit, but you could place the conveyors in a different location on the structure. I'm trying to think of one that looked like that but the closest I could come that I have been close to was in Malinta Ohio and I don't have any pictures of it that I know of and it would be in the pre-digital era.

At you looking for a fertilizer plant or a feed mill? The Blair Line kit is a nice feed mill / fertilizer dealer, but a mill like of that size probably only receives a few carloads of fertilizer a year. Maybe a couple loads of nitrogen and phosphate. The plants churn out unit trains that get broken up and distributed around the country.

Whatever that Blair Line kit was. I think it's a "blending plant" or something like that.

I've been researching an urban fertilizer operation for my layout, mostly as an inside joke commemorating a local TV commercial from the late '70s with a cult following:

/>
All kidding aside, other than the skiing this was real - there truly was this enormous mound of bovine excrement near Santa Fe's Hobart Yard in Los Angeles. Though I'm still looking for photo references, my recollection is moderately clear there was nothing special about the operation other than the huge concrete pads for drying the dung. Most of the buildings were typical metal industrial sheds of the era; I do recall the conveyors being larger industrial belt-types on truss frames.

This can easily double for a fertilizer plant.

There’s a fertilizer facility in my hometown that’s about that size, maybe a little bigger. They typically only receive one hopper at a time or so and the business is very seasonal. Good little industry to model though.

That's a neat building. It's on my radar.

But I SWEAR there was something very similar to the Blair Line one.

I think you are thinking of the different configurations of the Blair Line kit, but I've got a few (hopefully)  helpful things I'll post tonight about small fertilizer dealers.

Recent issue of MR had plans for a well-proportioned fertilizer plant.
Failing to prepare is preparing to fail.
