Wow great idea Jim and it looks super!!
Just one thing I might add and the inner fog lines on your road should be yellow.

Finished up one of these 2nd generation gensets...

Holy crap Alvin, that is outstanding. Wow !

Edit: Still admiring that picture and I just discovered something. What happened to the front pilot ? Did it break off ? It seems to tilt downwards and touch the ground.

I agree, adding the highway was a great idea.  So how did you paint the lines?  Little N scale line-painting truck?  :)

Very hard to believe that Jim misses anything- if you visit his layout - his attention to detail, and his progressive refinement technique is clearly evident.

Kind regards,
Bill

A couple more videos of my 1954 AT&SF El Capitan.  This is about 2 years before the high level equipment was delivered.  I still need 1 more mail storage car, otherwise it is complete.

Please excuse the Milwaukee Road caboose in the first video; I shot these on my home layout which is the Milwaukee Road between Madison, WI and Prairie du Chien, WI in 1952-1954.

Two things:

1. The white base I took this picture on isn't perfectly flat, its a little sloped up towards left of frame so it makes it seem like the pilot is lower than it is.
2. The sill and walkway were a little warped into a concave form when I got the parts from Shapeways so I've been trying to slowly reverse stress the walkway into the opposite curvature.

From a side profile you can see that the walkway is a little warped concave down

Not paint, Peter, chart tape.  I had a stash left over from the previous layout and it proved to be more than enough.

You are more than kind, sir.

For anyone who might be interested, I'm about a half hour south of Nashville...but email first!

That's a shame. One reason I am (still) not a big fan of shapeways, you spend all that time and effort with their products and you can end up with a warped model.  :(

Warped or not, that is another stunning look. Very well done. Did you do the etchings ? Do you offer them for sale as well ?

Believe it or not, I actually didn't make any etchings for this model, fans are hand cut from 0.2mm nickel silver and bent to shape(nobody makes an 8 blade 52" fan, the 11 blade SD70ACe ones from Trainworx are close), handrail stanchions are GMM parts and the fan grills are nylon teabag material cut to fit (probably my favorite paintable fine mesh material to use for models)

Holy cow, excellent work there. Thanks for the tip with the nylon teabag material, I have to check that out. Hair for the antennas another great tip, I was thinking using the tips of cat whiskers or may fly tails for fly tying but will give hair a try.   :)

Assembled my first freight car from one of the new Briggs Models 3D printed kits.  This is a 100-Ton welded gondola with flat ends built by Hawker Siddeley in 1967:

You may recall the disaster that befell the Sub because of a leaky valve in the kitchen above (disregard the fact that the total insurance settlement went to nearly 50k) and caused some scenery damage - here's a shot to refresh your memory:

Making lemonade from lemons, here's what I've come up with:

And a couple of closer shots from either end:

I'm pleased with the progress so far; the road is based on the one that crosses the real thing near Keene, and thanks to Google's street view I can capture the details nicely.

LOVE THE ROAD!!!  GREAT PLACE FOR ALL THOSE TRACTOR TRAILERS.
