The Briggs model had new truck frames to get the spacing correct on the cowl units.

How confident are you?  Both are 70'-8" long.  I'm sure that for a model the same mech could be used with different trucks.  Of course, one would want to fill all the empty space inside the 'M' with some weight...

The Dofasco 6 axle truck has the shortest wheelbase of any production 6 axle truck. If you compare a C40-8/-8W with a C40-8M, one immediate clue beyond the obviousness of the Dofasco truck having a shorter wheelbase, is that the air reservoirs are located at the ends of the fuel tank, while on the C40-8/-8W the reservoirs are recessed into the fuel tank on the engineers side. Given the common overall length of the locomotives, this change has to be for a reason. To me, this indicates that there was sufficient space to mount them on the ends rather than the standard recessed position.

I cannot locate on the interwebs a source for truck centers on the C40-8M. Wiki for the HR-616 has truck centers of 54'-6" and a wheelbase of 11'-2" for the Dofasco truck.

Pretty sure there were plans for the locomotive model in the early 1990s in MR, maybe 1993?

The distance from centre axle to centre axle is 45' 4". Be careful as there are several dimensions given here. Bolster to bolster is very different, 48' 9". If someone misreads that as truck centres they will have a wonky model. Don't trust what you read on the web unless they show an original CN data sheet.

The wheelbase of 11' 2" is the same on the Dash 8.

I'm excited about the new Dash 8 locomotive. In 1992 the C&NW borrowed two of the BC Rail units for testing, and that is the perfect excuse to preorder one of these. They won't match the unit numbers used for the test, but very close. Plus working rock lights!

Anyone know of a place to preorder other than Rapido's own website? A quick google search indicates most hobby websites don't have the preorder up yet. Or is the best place Rapido's own site?

I'm assuming they're referring the rock lights as the double set of ditch lights BCOL used.

Ok, what are rock lights?

If you look at the four "ditch lights" on BC Rail engines you can see that one pair is slightly pointed inwards which were an effort to give the crew as much advance notice as possible of rock slides and other obstructions when rounding the tight curves in the mountains on the BC Rail network.

Jason,
When will we know if the quebec and Labrador scheme is confirmed for production or not? I'm trying to avoid a situation where I preorder it but it doesn't get made and the preorder deadline is over.

BTW, thank you for the headlights and ditch lights. You guys keep making it harder to not buy your products !

We recommend you see your favourite/favorite dealer first and only come to our web site if you can't find the model anywhere else.

But most dealers will be carrying these so you should have no problem.

You're welcome!

Unfortunately we won't know until the order deadline as the vast majority of orders come in at the deadline. The best thing to do if you want a QNS&L loco is to pre-order. Make sure you don't order from a dealer who requires upfront payment. Remember - the dealers don't pay us in advance so you should not pay them in advance.

If they require a small deposit for pre-orders, make sure it is 100% refundable.

We'll, not like I'm not going to grab a trio of the zebra's, so I can compare the C40-8M to my HR-616 shell to see if it'll work. That's probably the best method, since it's possible the shell I have isn't 100% correct dimensionally.

Jason... my Intermountain cylindrical's are TOO LONG!!! When will that be addressed in N scale?

Or, this one taken last year in Cincinnati - just add an FVM NS GE ES44 and a couple of the MTL GATX airslide hoppers:
