That Rapido coupler isn't much bigger than the Bachmann knuckle...

No kidding!  That's why we call that Bachmann coupler "boxing glove".  I think Daniel aptly coined that name.

I haven't bought anything from Bachmann in so long I've never had to deal with their new couplers.  In fact, I think the last new Bachmann I bought while we lived in Pasco - and we moved 40 years ago this August.  For the time, their ACF Center Flows were nice models, and much easier to convert to 3-bay cars than the Atlas.

As for that coupler, I imagine the Rapido also works better?  Besides, what other coupler SHOULD an "Arnold/Rapido" model have?

Peteski:  I suspect they did use larger wheels.

The wheels on the Arnold caboose are essentially 36" - at least thats what my vernier caliper says.

That makes sense.  European models use roughly scale 900-1000 mm diameter wheels.  That would be about 36-39" wheels. Arnold just used their standard European wheel.

Probably larger than most bobbers, but there's no reason a railroad couldn't have used passenger wheels on a caboose.

I'm not a railroad historian, but I suspect that in era when bobber caboose were in general use they used smaller wheels, even on passenger cars of that period.

At least some passenger cars were using 36 inch wheels in the 1880s.  I don't know when bobbers finally disappeared, but am sure they were still running then.

Seems highly unlikely that a bobber would have 36" wheels. Can't remember seeing a pic of one where I thought otherwise.

Some of the ex N&W ones survived up to mid century on shortlines.

Is there any chance of someone getting scale demensions of these cars? I am now pondering about modeling one of these. The Pacific Electric had 8 total, the last 4 were retired in 1941

Looks like a scale drawing there.  ;)

11' 6 3/4" to the roof line.

20'6" from end to end (over end sills)

Body 8' wide

8' 5" for the roof width.

Oh that. I posted some dimensions earlier in the thread. I'll add a few more key dimensions.

thanks Mark, as for PE drawings, they fall under the catagory of close enough for rock n roll...and the Botchmann looks closer. Might try a 0.020" styrene reskin....

Agreed.  :D

Might want to consider evergreen siding as well. https://evergreenscalemodels.com/collections/freight-car-siding/products/2020-020-opaque-white-polystyrene-freight-car-siding
