Micro-Trains has announced a Penn Central Heavyweight 5pk, coming 11/18.

Did the Penn Central EVER have them? I assume they had a some, but a train full of heavyweight coaches, all in the same color seems odd. Penn Central had trains with lots of different types of cars, and as they had inherited so much cars, why would they use rather old heavyweight equipment?

If Penn Central truly had a heavyweight coach only train like the one offered, where would that train have traveled? As a commuter train somewhere in New England/Boston area?

I wish they had announced that baggage car as a single model.  :(

BTW, their Pre-Order Policy states that a 25% non-refundable deposit is taken on all pre-order products. If the product is never produced, do you get the deposit back? Their statement is quite confusing.

That N&W car is interesting. I'm tempted.

Also, the PC cars... PC DID have heavyweights, although the devil will be in the details. It's possible the pack will be MoW cars. Do you have a link for them?

I'm also thinking I need those and I'm mad I didn't jump on @Dave V 's E8!

I wonder what the status of the single window coach is.

I'm liking the N&W boxcar even though it's not exact it's about as good as we will see in N.

I'm interested. Does anyone know if MTL got around to doing this (announced Jan 2017):

These three modified N scale 50-foot cars join our growing fleet and feature new sides and ends depicting changes mandated by the AAR. These cars will have correct ride height, photo-etched brake platforms, body mounted Magne-Matic couplers and exacting surface details.

They offered them in July 2017 as 180 00 010 (GM&O 58108, single door), 181 00 010 (ATSF 55147, plug door) and 182 00 010 (D&RGW 65204, double door).

The Norfolk & Western boxcar (182 00 060) belongs to the new cars.

Maybe it's me, but those look like truck mounted couplers: https://www.micro-trains.com/archives/mediakit/medkit1707.html

(EDIT, my memory says they are truck mounted, as does this: http://mrv.trains.com/news-reviews/staff-reviews/2017/10/micro-trains-line-n-scale-50-foot-ps-boxcars All three cars have truck-mounted draft gear, typical of Micro-Trains cars)

I was almost excited for the SP wellcars, but then realized they are an articulated pair and that looks like it would be a fun thing to try do put on one truck.

I wonder what the status of the single window coach is.

we are working on it.  All hands are pushing the DODX flat and once that is finished in a few weeks then we will continue cutting steel on the Coach. Right now I don't have a release date but maybe Eric will have it at the NSE in June.

If I had to do N scale all over again I might just go straight PC...getting easier to do it right!

Looks like the Penn Central HW coaches were used on the Valparaiso commuter train.

That communter train went on under Conrail. Yes, a Conrail passenger train!

But did Conrail still use the Penn Central heavyweights?

I wish Micro-Trains would have done a 3-car runner pack of HW coaches in PRR tuscan red like the one sold as a single. Alas, they never did. What a pity.

but a train full of heavyweight coaches, all in the same color seems odd.

They are selling 'sets' of cars to a theme.
No and never any indication they are 'a train'.
Use them as you see fit.

A look at the much-missed Jerry Laboda's Passenger Car Photo Index shows the coaches in MTL's PC 5-pack are numbered for ex-Pennsy P70R cars (see http://passcarphotos.info/Indices/PC2.htm)

Making these appear closer to the prototype would involve replacing the six-wheel trucks with four-wheel ones (presumably not a straight swap as MTL's illustration suggests an offset bolster), filling in some windows & fitting arch roofs for three our of four cars (only 1676 has a clerestory roof in the photos I've found).

A search for Conrail Valparaiso (or Valpo) commuter trains will find a variety of photos of P70R cars in PCgreen and PRR maroon behind Conrail power.
