Plaza Japan has reasonable prices and shipping for their Thomas stuff.  I think Thomas runs about $70-$80 plus $15 express shipping.

... You forgot to use the scale icon.  :D

@GaryHinshaw would want to know why you didn't use a scale icon.   :x

Yes, even you can now afford few Thomas & Friends N scale sets.  :)  But you are right, when they first came out years ago, the prices (in USA) went through the roof for a while. But even then, you could find one for less than $100 (I'm talking about the set with Thomas and couple of passenger cars). I recommend that you buy the latest release - they have improved Thomas' mechanism.

Last year the prices were sky high.  I saw prices in the $400-$500 range for the Thomas, Annie and Clarabel set.  That was because Tomix hadn't made any for a while and the demand drove the prices up, up, up.  Then Tomix announced another run and prices dropped backed to where they are today.  Interesting that prices today is just about what I paid for my set 12 years ago.

Well, that's good to hear. Our club's Thomas had a meltdown last year and we couldn't justify the cost to replace it for the Sodor-themed module we take to shows. I'll let "the boss" know we can afford it now.

Exactly!
And like I said, they also redesigned the mechanism, actually making it better.

Correct!  Supposedly the model that I got was the first of the newer and better design.  Anything before that I think had open slots of the bottom with gears showing and supposedly a motor that have a very short life span and burns out.

Maybe, but Henry and Gordon are non-existent.  Were they ever made in N scale?  However, James (red) seems to be plenty going for around $80 from Japan.  Percy (green) seems to be readily available too.  But Percy is probably not decoderable since the cab is solid and not hollow like Thomas.

Here's a trifecta for around $200 from PlazaJapan.

My kids, 3 and 5, both don't like the new Thomas wooden sets, they'd rather have their older stuff

Henry and express coaches were released in the first run.. Gordon was on the drawing board but never made it to production.  There were a couple more freight cars too, but anything English would work.
