MOW Challenge Gulf Mobile and Ohio Boom Tool Car

I'll have a go at this Boom / Tool car.

Two things I really like about this car:
1.  When they cut down the body they moved the original car end rather than building a new end.
2. They kept the belt rail on the side plates that go on the boom end, that contrast with the plain section where the baggage door was.

This is one of the coolest car mash ups I have ever seen.  Would be a neat addition to any layout.

I had originally planned on using a car from my junk box however none had the proper door window placement. The Microtrain 70' baggage has the correct placement. The car arrived yesterday. I'll start on modifications tonight.

I didn't realize how bad that last  photo was when I posted it. The first thing I noticed was the Very prominent belt line is not on the Microtrain car. This being my first kit bash in over 40 years. I made mistakes on cutting the sides down. I was so focused on the belt line that I cut it there. Placing a better stock image of the car here.

To separate the end required a horizontal cut to separate it from the floor. Then a vertical cut just deep enough to separate. As shown I cut the sides to low. I will add the belt line so prominent of the prototype. A bit of filing was required on the end to get the proper height.

Here I've filed the sides down and glued. Got a bit sloppy with the glue. Lesson learned as this will be weathered and a bit beat up I can live with it. Test fitting end and roof parts.

End glued in place. Roof sections glued. Doors filled. Grabs , boom support , Brake Wheel , Truck chains to go then paint . Have the Gulf ,Mobile and Ohio decals but not the MOW decals. Also need decking for the open end.

Still working away. Boom support done. Used what was on hand , wooden beam and supports from model ship etching.  Added decking would have liked etched but again have to use what is on hand . Filled under deck where end was cut.

More on the boom support.  Stirrups added at new side access points. Brake Wheel installed. Had just enough primer to do the job. The next post is a complete disaster - stay tuned!!!

Well this is where I stop for now. I'll polish this turd some more in the future. Still want to add grab irons. Truck chains. Window bars and glazing. Still needs details painted black as well as undercarriage. And decals. Then more details on deck. Got the airbrush and cheap compressor out and mixed my yellow. Now I have painted Automobiles before so I was pretty confident I could use the air brush. But alas I could not find my regulator. Pressing forward I figured I could overcome even this. But the brush was not feeding correctly.  I'm testing this on cardboard before hitting the model. It begins to work ok after some adjustments. Then becomes sporadic. I keep at it and get some paint down. Then the cheap compressor locks up. So I do start to do some hand brush touch up. It's at this time I noticed the consistency of the paint in the jar. Quickly checking I realized I had mixed White water base with my Yellow Enamel.  So here it is.

The car is cool.   

I've had paint jobs go awry before - it can be disheartening.  The worst was when I went to put Dullcote (from a rattle can) on my finished model - and somehow grabbed a can of metallic gold (from a craft project) instead!        I had to strip, repair any details that were damaged by stripping, and try again!

Maybe it’s my 3 foot rule kicking in but I think the paint makes it look appropriately beat up

Yea I was pretty bummed out. I'm going to press forward . With decals and weathering and make decisions from there. I'm a stay at home dad currently so my 2 year old makes day projects impossible. Working in my Blacksmith shop part time , I have a job to do due this coming weekend so my nights will be tied up on that.

Hopefully after weathering it will look better to me . It does look better in normal vision. This closeups are unforgiving.
