Nice (small) pic of the Land O' Corn in May 1967 with E7 A/B and flexis:

I would definitely go E7 next before the E8.   I know LL did the E7 in IC but I think the paint color was pretty bad IIRC.

If you had too, sure.  But by the mid-60's, the GP9s were the normal power for the the Iowa Division trains (Land O' Corn, Hawkeye and even the mail trains I think).  I'd say they were even more symbolic of a late 60's Land O' Corn than the Flex-Vans.

Atlas did make the IC TT GP7s about 10 years ago:

I grew up along the route of the Land O' Corn(Rockford IL) but was only 3 when it was taken off, interesting train. Always liked IC passenger colors. Heres a pic of it in Dubuque with Flexi's on the station track, as well.

So, with zero knowledge of this Flexivan traffic, did these "spine" cars with vans travel exclusively in passenger consists?

Not necessarily.   I believe the NYC used them in freight service.   But the IC used them for either mail or express (I'm not sure which) in passenger trains.

Since we seem to have several IC experts here, how late would the brown and orange IC trailers have been in service?  I model 1974, so ICG is "current", and the IC "piggyback" scheme would still be around, but what about the passenger colors scheme?

It looks nice, but I can find other things to spend the money on if it's too old for my era.

Maybe @Atlas Paul  can put it on the idea board.  :)

For what it's worth, I'm using the Walther's coaches.  They have the look.

I looked at those and they aren't a bad if it means no painting.

This is going to take a lifetime to find this stuff...  Fortunately my planned IC trackage is only 18" long so a couple engines and the flats will fill what I need until the rest is found.   :)

Walthers paint is pretty good color wise.  Looks good with the CCS RPO and diner... and sleepers if you start modeling other trains.  ;-)

When you're looking for baggage cars, don't pass up the 60' "Harriman" cars from WOT as well.  The colors are a little off on all the WOT IC models, but can be blended a bit if you darken the roofs.

CJM413,

Thanks for a Blast from the Past.. I remember reading (studying, drooling over) the Pike Sized Passenger Trains articles many, many years ago.  It was fun to see it again.

I did a little digging about the IC Flexi-vans.  They were built in 1959, which means they were Mark I, and took 36' trailers.
Numbers were 900, 901 and 902.

Data here: http://www.icrr.net/passenger4.htm

I might still get one of these, as I'm not holding my breath for Mark I cars to ever be made in N scale.

I went to college in Carbondale, Illinois and saw these on some IC trains from 1964-1968 and really thought they were neat. I plan to get a flat and two trailers ordered soon. I assume it sholdn't be too hard to drop the wheels and dollies off the trailers and mount them on the flat. These cars were very distinctive and an interesting concept.
