HO scale Tunnel Motor Preview from the new book

Thought you would like to see a sample from the two page spread from the new Weathering Book*:

I've actually never seen this model this close before and there are a few things that I would like to fix. However, it will be printed much smaller in the book, so I might just move on. I guess this is my version of the 3' rule. :tommann:

*yes, I'm still working on it.

I guess my question to the group is "is there an effect on this model that you would like to learn about"?

How about the rust on the truck frame? Very nice stuff.

A little dab of water soluble burnt sienna oil paint floated in 70% alcohol.  Apply like a wash, and the alcohol dries out (for lack of a better word) the carrier leaving a random deposit of pigment.  This, IMO, looks like light surface rust.

Since I model SP everything.  I love the rust on the cab shades and battery boxes. Oh and just about everything else.

Did you leave the model flat/horizontal so it would pool in a not runny fashion? Or a really diluted vertical/run off sort of wash? Great effect. Love the artist oils for streaks but have not seen this sort of subtle pattern before.

No, I said "Ed's Law."

Yes, flat.  Only the Windsor&Newton water solubles; not just any oil.

Visor and streaks?

Just a bunch of oil paint layers.  I would need several paragraphs to tell you about streaks.

This is actually a great idea.  The prototype that I was basing the weathering off of had a UP patch - but I might paint a line instead.

Yes love my W&N oils, game changing medium for sure. Would you think a turpentine wash would be ok to substitute for the iso? I haven’t used ISO since some strange glazing (perhaps reaction against dullcote?) when another member turned me on to the artist turpentine. Either way fantastic results you have there.

Yes, ISO and dullcote will always produce a white glazing (that is sometimes advantageous but difficult to predict and control).

You might get the result you're looking for with turpentine, but in my experience you'll just get a nice wash since it'll mix well. The trick is finding something that doesn't well!
