SO I took the thing apart and did a few things to it including de-gunking the mechanism and gear towers and re-guaging the wheels.

Yup, just like no one uses code 55 track, code 80 is the only way to go, lol. Although, I do believe that QC across the industry certainly needs a pick me up.
Instead of trying to convince him that the trucks are identical, isn't there a parts diagram for that model available somewhere? That should be indisputable.
