Started building the sawmill for Townsend on my logging layout. I scanned the plans and used photo editing software to adjust the width of the building to fit the space available. All of the wood was stained prior to assembling. The base is complete, and the mill itself just fits after swapping the drive wheel on the steam donkey to the other side.

I finished the sawmill! I scanned the plans and reduced its width to fit the available space, then built it according the the directions from there. I stained the wood before starting construction with Minwax Classic Gray. After it was assembled, I "weathered" it with some Pan Pastel chalks. The roof is removable on one side - it's held in place with double-sided tape.

Here's the sawmill at home on the layout, with the surrounding scenery completed. There are a few more details to add - a derrick to unload the log truck, people, etc., but it's basically complete.

I completed the shadowbox today for the layout, including the addition of a light. I also added knobs for the Bluepoint turnout controls. With that, the layout is largely complete! Still a few more details to come, and I have some custom decals in the works for the Shay and Climax, so I'll have some "Little River Lumber Co." equipment to run.

What did you use for lighting?

Nothing fancy. It's a 4' LED light fixture I found at Home Depot. It's "bright white" - 4000K temp, which isn't too far from the 5000K daylight bulbs I use over my main layout. it's rated at 1800 lumens - plenty for this little layout.

Stunning!  I can't make this picture large enough to soak it all in!

No, I said "Ed's Law."

I had great results with a cheap LED shop light as well, but not so much with those 16' rolls of LEDs on ebay. Maybe I'll gut a shop light to fit my space.

So how long did this take from beginning to end?

A couple of months, maybe? It went quickly. I guess that's the advantage of a 4 sq ft layout!

Thanks to JNS Graphics, the Little River Lumber Company now has its own company-owned locomotives. I added some cut lumber and a few busy workers to complete the sawmill scene.
