Small Auto Salvage

This one might be a stretch of the definition for "industrial", but I want to play along and I need to model this building anyway as part of my Rosa Wye Overpass module, so I'll just go for it. 



I know nothing about the property aside from Google Earth and Street View photos showing a gradual flow of junkers and an occasional tow truck.  So with that, we'll just make believe it's a backyard "Small Auto Savage" shop.

I've already got it's spot on the module ready and waiting.  The build will focus on both the shop and house, and I'm going to use my favorite method of drawing it up in CAD and cutting styrene sheet with the Silhouette.

Cut and laid out the footprints. Looks like I'll need to move the gravel back road.  I need to leave room on the other side for a paved dead end.

Yesterday I plotted the shop in Stuido.

I picked through my styrene drawer and found a few different board and batten sizes to match the aluminium siding, and even found a corrugated sheet for the roof.
Cut out and test fit and we're on our way!

That tow truck won't fit through those doors.  neither will the cars unless you fold the mirrors in.

That's why it's the "Small" Auto Salvage.   

I have the shop doors at 8ft square on a 10ft wall (rising to 12ft at the crest), measured through Google Earth's 3D polygons.  That's the best I can get without going out to actually measure, and those are pretty standard sizes too, aren't they?  I agree it does look small, but I think the proportions do match up with the foot-print (from county assessor) and other reference.   

And yeah, the heavy duty wrecker definitely needs to be replaced with a more appropriate sized tow truck.

I tried to match the angles, but didn't post them side by side so here they are again.

I realized I missed some vents on the shack, and the shop door has a window pane.  But next up is the house.

And we have a house.  Since building it was just a repeat of everything with the shop, let's just cut-to the pictures.


The big open square is a sliding glass door leading to a porch, which will be the next task.

From Google Earth pictures, I thought the side part looked a little like a garage door.  Of course once I designed and assembled the model that way I took a drive by the real place and discovered nope, no garage door.  Oh well.

Ok, I took a quick side trip from the buildings to help align this one in the "Industrial" category, a little.  What's a good piece of equipment that fits both "industrial" and Small Salvage?  How about an engine hoist?!

Started with some stryene scraps and tiny phosphor-bronze wire.  On the left is a set of 3D printed hydraulics from a the spare parts bin. We'll take one of those.

Short of raiding the girlfriends jewelry box, I don't have any tiny chain, so I tried braiding some out of stranded wire.  Turned out a lot better than I expected!
