Industrial Challenge - Vulcan Stone and Lime Loadouts Hanover, PA

Yes, it's gotten me into a few places.  Essroc in Frederick MD is another spot I got into, but not much traffic in there anymore.  We deliver to Maryland Midland as well, but I haven't run that route in a few years.

There isn't much to that end is there ?  Just a dump pit, conveyor and piles.  I guess everything gets trucked out from here ?

I was wondering what to do about the staircase on the side of the building, so I did a search on Shapeways.  Wouldn't you know it, I found EXACTLY (well, 99%) what I needed.  The stairs have 6 flights, alternating directions as you go up.  Well, here is a set of stairs, with 6 flights, alternating as you go up.  The only thing I need to do is cut the landing off the bottom and attach it to the top.  It measures out at 5.5" tall, which is the height where my highest siding break is, between the corrugated sheet metal and the inset I beam section is.

I played the lottery last night, and tonight, and didn't get as lucky.  I'll try again the rest of the week.

Well, my staircase showed up yesterday but it was about 1/8" or so too short, so I had to improvise.  I used a stairway set from another kit to make up the difference at the bottom. 







Next up will be adding the back and top stepped sections and figuring out some lighting as my LED's showed up this week

I got the stepped section of the roof line and back side of building done this evening.  Now to figure out how to run the wiring for lights.

I took the opportunity with the warm weather to get building outside to get a coat of primer.  Will paint tomorrow. 
 


Then the task of trying to get the lights wired.  Going to be fun fun.  I have 5 on the building, 1 is just around the corner at the far door.

Life has gotten in the way of the build, some uncertainty in the near term that has my mind anywhere but modeling.  I did get it primed, and painted tan.  Still need to add the green stripe at top and also do the elevator and other various items on the other side.  Hope I have time to finish it. 

Did manage to get lighting tested (after burning out 4 LEDs).  For being a model railroader, my electrical understanding is very limited.  This building will rarely be lit, so I'm wondering what anyone would do for a power source.  I'm testing with 2 AA batteries stacked end to end.  1K ohm resistors per 2 LED's.

Did manage to get lighting tested (after burning out 4 LEDs).  For being a model railroader, my electrical understanding is very limited.  This building will rarely be lit, so I'm wondering what anyone would do for a power source.  I'm testing with 2 AA batteries stacked end to end.  1K ohm resistors per 2 LED's.

If you have some resistors, you can wire in a 9v or 12v AC or DC wall wart.  That's what I use.  Just remember you need to put the resistor on the long leg of the LED and to the negative pole if you're using DC.  AC it doesn't matter.

Check the voltage on an old phone charger, they're usually about 3.5 volts.  This can work if you put a couple of LEDs in series without resistors.  (I think LEDs are rated for about 1.5v each.  I prefer the wall wart power source because it gives you enough juice to run a circuit in one section of the layout, and can be plugged into a power strip or outlet that can be turned off.  Much better than running around turning off battery packs at the end of the night.

you can also tap a little power from the track voltage .. just make sure you have a 1000 ohm resistor in series with one of the leads.

But if you are going to light up buildings, I would run a 12-15 volt DC line around the layout for you to tap into ..

For a building that size, you could install a battery holder inside, and hide a switch somewhere on the back of the building. The batteries would last for years.

Progress photos as we head into the final day before voting begins.  Still have more green stripe to add, attach the stair way and the elevator along with the two vertical tanks on the other side.  I have lights installed but probably wont get them lit for contest.

I'm calling this done for the point of being done for the challenge.  I was able to get lighting ran and tested individually, but not as a complete set.  Still messing around with how to light them and I don't want to burn any more out at this point, blowing 4 of them during testing.  But the lights are in and positioned how I'd want them.  Shots from all sides and then the last one of the quarry scene. The lime loadout was about 90% scratchbuilt from sheet styrene, various size I-beams and angle iron from Evergreen. Staircase was 3D printed by Shapeways, elevator was part of a kit from Rix and the two vertical tanks were pieces of PVC pipe. I had a lot of fun doing this and gives me the confidence to build the stone loadout at a later date.  I have also added my Flickr folder for the prototype photos I took for reference shots.  Good luck to all the entrants !
