I'm behind Bachmann products, it's easier to push them down the track that way!  :P

In all seriousness, I would be cautious at best. You get what you pay for...

The Atlas analog DC mechanism that you know is better than the Bachmann analog DC mechanism that you don't know.

I wouldn't get too excited... though light years ahead of the old Bachmann clunker. Looks like they plan to offer it with sound. Fuel tank is an epic fail though! :D

Any photos of the engineers side? What about the chassis?
There's a shyness found in reason
Apprehensive influence swallow away
You seem to feel abysmal take it
Then you're careful grace for sure
Kinda like the way you're breathing
Kinda like the way you keep looking away

OK, lets look at this from the other side.  It seemed that every store I went into before Christmas that had small-scale train sets had Bachmann.  How would this be as a train set loco, for a beginner?  The 1974 version was tough and reliable, even if it didn't look quite right.  Would somebody getting one of these be tempted to stay in the hobby, or give up and look for something else?

Looks like another new loco using the old-school "high-friction" trucks with inside bearings and probably wheel-back pickup wipers.  At least that is what I get from those photos. Some companies just refuse to embrace a good thing.

And it is not like Bachmann never used that design. Acela did (on all except for the power-car).

Thanks for sharing...and taking a hit for the team if you had to buy one!

Does it have flywheels (like the RS-3) or no flywheels (like the GP7)?

And don't forget the obligatory "boxing gloves" insults  :D

Good point.  Assuming the drive isn't 💩, it would make a decent "train set" locomotive for someone that doesn't want to make too large of an initial investment.

A GP40 is also a better choice for the younger market, as most kids have never seen the proverbial "effunit" that comes with most train sets.   Even if they haven't seen a GP40, they've probably seen another GP38/40/-2/rebuild that would make it more appealing to a younger buyer or recipient.

^this. The loco looks decent at a glance, but the fuel tank is really bad (it just slants inward toward the center of the loco). Probably runs decent so a good starter loco for someone new to model trains.  8)

Mark (I didn't buy one)

What's going on with the step down at the hand brake?  Looks like all they did was bevel the corner not even attempting to model the step.

Isn't that what they did with all their other diesels?

I only have the 44 and 90 tonners and I think those have something that at least looks like a step.

Years ago I had a Tyco (Horribly Oversized) GP-20 with the same feature (bevel in place of step).

I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that.

The steps have Atlas/Roco (HO) GP40 syndrome.

On the subject of FUBAR fuel tanks, those Atlas/Roco slotted fuel tanks are the 💩 standard....
