Saw a couple Athearn announcements for N:

Is the Fire Rescue trucks something new? I can't say I've seen them before?

ATSF bay windows? You're kidding, right? OK, they made me look. Yeah, they're foobs, but reasonably close foobs - late (1980) acquisitions from TP&W, the only bays Santa Fe ever had. All three numbers are correct, although 999655 never ran in revenue service, and the others were mostly kept in local use.

But... whatever it takes for Athearn to generate cash flow from N.

No, they've done the rescues before. I have the lime green "Rescue 3" unit already (and it is really nice).

MORE NKP Bay Windows ?!? After none for all these years, two manufactures (Athearn and Bluford) announce these within a month or so of each other!  At least they aren't duplicating numbers.

Neither is 100% accurate for the NKP, but the Bluford model is closer.  The NKP cabeese had a unique window pattern.

The 2 SP bay windows I already have are drop-dead gorgeous. I don't really "need" any more but they are almost too difficult to resist!

The KCS versions are interesting - they had a slew of bay windows but almost all were stainless steel sided and had round side windows. The few that were white that I know of were rebuilt outside braced boxcars. I’ll probably buy one anyway.

The Athearn rescue truck was the winner of the Enhanced N Scale Vehicle of the Year Award in 2011.

The diagonal panel roof with or without a roofwalk on the Bluford model makes it a much better representation of almost any given bay window caboose built before the mid/late 1970's vs the x-panel roof and no roofwalk on the Athearn model.

Welp, it looks like Murphy's Modeling law applies to me, paint a model and the manufacturer will soon release a version. Here's an ex-Erie Lackawana caboose that was decorated before I owned an airbrush, so the white paint is pretty thick and red paint does need a touch-up in a few places, but it does have a roof walk that I stole off an Atlas boxcar. If anybody can't wait for Athearn to come out with a better version of this, I'm willing to entertain  offers via PM. I'm looking forward to Buford Shops version which has a fatter bay window found on the NKP.

It depends on which WP bay window caboose you had in mind.

Athearn's model is based on SP C-50-9, and WP 481-486 were identical to the C-50-9.

Ah, that was the year I got into N scale as a modeler. I had always been strictly HO and no layout at the time, so some things I didnt pay much attention too.

The C-50-4’s were built by International Car in 1972 for SP as numbers #1875-1929. Athearn is offering the model in a couple different Southern Pacific schemes and a variety of other roads as well (see below). Available in December 2018.

Athearn has announced a new run of their Ford C-Series fire truck line with a walk-in rescue body unit. Ford’s C-Series cab-over chassis were built for more than 30 years from 1957 through 1990, so they span quite a few modeling era’s.
