At some point, unannounced, yesterday as far as I can tell. It was discussed in the Lounge (under what we want for 2018 thread).  I also hope it is permanent (probably until we start seriously misbehaving and the moderators decide to reinstate the silly system).

Chris333, those are some fine Photos of your layout!

And more nice work from everybody else. And if you miss the silly up-votes (you Facebook junkies  ), here are some golden acorns for you (BTW, that is an excellent substitute). But I still that a short written attaboy is better than any up-votes.

It looks, like you can upvote only.  That I can get along with!

Further progress on my Kinzua scene.  The shotgun house in the foreground is my attempt at modeling a residence on that side of the track, next to a lumber mill parking lot and across from the local tavern - the kind of place you could picture Scott Farkus growing up in.  Further details to be added as I figure out what those details should be.

yeah - got so lucky that the one finished model of a log truck that Trainworx has produced was my exact time frame in my exact locale!  $$$ free-flowing from the wallet...

Carbide drills like those can be hard to use. They're usually fine in plastic, but they can shatter easily in harder materials.

Lucky for us then that the models we use them on are made of plastic. I am using them for years now. Good thing is, you can use them without a vise, just as they are by hand.

They are easy to break even in plastic, esp. if hand-held.  Even with the HSS you have to develop a light touch.

I also think that my #80 drill may actually be larger based on the way that the grab irons fit.

That's happened to me, where the package of #80s actually contained #78 bits.  Guess the QA folks were out on break that day (or else they figured no one would notice.  Maybe both...?)

Yes to that  ;) but after a while you'll get the drill. And at the price they are now available from China no big deal.

If I drill holes for grab irons for example, I "punch" a little hole with a needle first and then let the drill do the job and find its way and not trying to change direction while drilling. I break more of these drills when they fall off the workbench than I do drilling holes in plastic shells.

Great stuff this week. Nothing like the holidays to get help get some projects done!

Posted this in the DCC forum, but it was one of three steam locos I installed LokSound decoders with custom enclosures. Here is one of the “upgrades” I did in an Athearn Big Boy.

I programmed the LokSound with their latest Challenger file which sounds fantastic. The Full Throttle function is especially neat if you have some momentum programmed in (or even if you chop back the throttle very quickly) as the loco will coast a bit and the chuff sounds fall off to reflect that there is no load on the loco. Here is a clip of the sounds I took with my phone (apologies for quality and quirks!):

Happy New Year everyone!

Started decaling #1504 this afternoon.  I stopped briefly due to the darker lettering from one of the photos I had seen online, but later found another one that was closer to this from around 2002.  I noticed some of the grills/vents aren't the same pattern so it's not 100% anyway.  Have to get other side finished and get handrails painted before installing them.  Maybe it'll be done tomorrow.

I've been working on something completely different, and made a lot of progress this weekend. It's a 1'x4' N-scale logging / switching layout based on the Gum Stump & Snowshoe track plan, and will have a logging camp at the upper-left, and a sawmill at the lower-right. I love Fall, so I took this opportunity to model it. I'm hoping to start on the Lucas Sawmill kit soon.

Well, I normally don't model what if's or fooby stuff -- but, after talking with a couple of close friends -- I decided to do more of a should have been. As SP owned only 1 RDC (#10) -- I decided to do would could have been or more appropriately - what should have been: SP #11 -- in Daylight.

What are Y'all's thoughts-?

Thanks,
Wolf
