Edit.. I went back to look at proto photos and the doors do stand out a bit when you look.. It would help to see the castings with a finished thickness of paint...

Ok, time for my in-person impression of the Turbo Train's factory prototype model (at the Springfield show).
It was a test-sample they just received from the factory few days ago. It was an undercoated unit (painted silver). I drooled over it running slowly on a small loop of Kato Unitrack. Bill S. then let me fondle it!  :D   Well, up-close it looks pretty darn good, including the panel engravings.  The window thickness was also not an issue (besides, the windows are heavily tinted).  The interior lighting was a bit overwhelming (like Jason mentioned earlier here) but that will be dealt with. The single-axle wheel-sets ride in outside needle-point bearings (very free-rolling). I really like the ingenious coupling system.  The cleverly designed snap-together couplings also carry the electrical connections, so all wheels pick up power.  At this point of the design process it was a DC-only unit.

Bill agreed to run it on our large NTRAK layout.   It ran smoothly, at both fast and ludicrous speed. It had no problem dealing with the large gaps and humps of a typical NTRAK layout's connecting tracks. No problems with going over facing and trailing points of Peco turnouts.  Zero derailments. Bill took several videos and he will post them later for all to see.  He also noted some minor possible issue which will be looked at and corrected if needed. 

Now I'm anxiously awaiting the units I reserved.  NICE!!

Does it have a motor and decoder unit on each end or just one?

I was told that both end units were powered.  No decoders were installed - just DC in the prototype model.

Thank you, good to know. In that case, I suspect there will be decoders to on both ends as well.

I find myself on a slippery slope towards buying one of these despite my initial decision not to :)

There will be a decoder in each end for sound models.
