Auxiliary fuel tank?

I was perusing through Railpictures and I came across these Florida East Coast photos that appear to show an auxiliary fuel tank between locomotives.  I'm curious how far this allows trains to run without refueling.  It's 350 miles from Jacksonville to Miami.  Maybe from Jacksonville and back without taking on more fuel.  Thoughts?
