I got no definitive dates from the Cajon group, but we do know it was painted Orange and Cream sometime in (early?) '48 and appears to have been repainted Yellow/Orange with a red (vermillion?) belt stripe by January '52.
That's good enough for me.

Im wondering if i need to paint it in the original in-service scheme as I'm still in 1947. I guess i have more research to do!

There always the thing called "modeler's licence".   It is your model RR, and you can do whatever pleases you.  :)

Read where? I'd like to see that.
The one B&W photo taken during WWII I know of shows the car in disrepair and dilapidated and appears light colored. I could be wrong.

I've made some progress on mine, got the roof and underbody painted. Looking for an appropriate pole and paint colors. Looks like "Reefer orange" is my best bet for the upper body. The wheels are a bit small, but they were free (thanks again Jason) and being narrow gauge, will probably be hidden under the body...the prototype trucks hardly show in pics. Tbc...

Adam, looks like you're screwed...we don't know what color it was in '47 :D
Or perhaps that's an advantage...

Progress is finally being made on the Descanso :D

I had to redo the narrow gauge  trucks; they fell apart; seems Delrin doesn't stick to styrene even when using "Magic" cement  No magic there.... Ended up using *superglue* cyanoacrylate to make the sandwiched parts stick, and stick it does, thank you, see pic below.

Also, reefer orange seemed just a bit too bright, so I ended up using old Floquil "UP Light Orange" for the orange band.
I like it :D

So the next assignment is truss rods, window curtains, and bluish-colored glass in the clerestory, arches, and "opera" windows. It's a lot of work for two square inches of real estate on a 600 sq. ft. layout....  :P

A little more progress. Installed truss rods and attached trucks. A little weathering.
Paint needs cleaning up, pic don't lie
Need to figure out the bluish stained glass effects. At this rate, the layout will be done in 50 years... remember, this is a "structure".
Still, having fun with this little guy.
