My first HO loco was a standard Bachmann F7, no DCC, no sound. It was on sale at Walthers. I didn’t want to spend much until I was sure I was going to switch from N to HO. It was DCC ready, but I never got around to adding a decoder. Couldn’t find the right one. Besides adding a decoder and speaker would cost about the same as a new DCC sound equipped unit.

I finally got around to making it a dummy unit. Took out the guts, cut away a lot of the frame to lighten it. Now it weighs the equivalent of 1-1/2 layout-standard 40’ cars …

Detailing complete, Ready for decals and weathering…

It’ll run permanently coupled at the end of a 4-unit consist…

@LIRR,

Dummy units aren't my cup of tea, but I appreciate your reasoning.  Do you have plan for lighting that F-unit?  An LED and a cheap mobile decoder to turn it on and off would be an easy retrofit.

Hope this helps,

And since you'll have the space, you might as well add ground lights too. Go all the way.

Would a trailing unit be lit up?

Counterpoint - will it always be trailing?

^This.  Also, when trailing as a set of light units, the headlight would be lit to provide protection towards the rear.

it'll always be as trailing unit. this consist is a one directional thru train that drops and/or picks up cars at the yard for local delivery. the only exception is when the consist backs up to re-couple to the train before departing.

10-4.  Now, next question: What's up with the B&O Geeps?
