ALCO repaint coming along…..

I haven’t posted in awhile but ive been busy….

The ALCO repaint is ready for weathering….

I’m building new bench work to extend the railroad about another 20 feet around the walls….

…and I’ve been working on structures and scenery at Wiegand ….

Finished my ALCO S4…..it’s my first use of pan pastels and dullcote. I previously used weathering powders without dullcote. I was just carefull handling equipment by the trucks only. I find the dullcote practiaclly eliminates what i just did. I practiced on an old loco and i thought it looked great….dullcote eliminated alot of the effects, especially the light colors. Overall i am happy with the results

"and i thought it looked great" How right you are! Before I read the post I was sitting here trying to figure out how you faded the paint. Someday I will try Pan Pastels but in the meantime, I use the cheap man's alternative. I have a large collection of artist chalk, in stick form, and I rub them on 600-1200 grit sandpaper to make my own. I have only used them on structures, so far, and was pleased with the outcome. Your application of Pan Pastels looks fantastic. I don't think I could accomplish the same results with paint. As you did, I sprayed my structures with Dullcote and it has protected my structures from handling, for years. I would do the same with rolling stock, as well. Great job! Glenn

I use Alclad flat finish now rather than Dullkote. It seems to be friendlier to weaterhing powders and Pan Pastels.

That's the stuff. As far as I can tell, it dries dead flat. It sprays evenly and levels beautifully, and it doesn't need thinning. And I've found it plays better with weathering powders.
