Maybe older Rivarossi stem locos had tiny pilot wheels, but I did not realize that Kato GS-4 has undersized pilot wheels.  Really?  :| :?

I'm not saying the scale is off, I'm saying the wheels on the prototype are the same size as the model

After seven months of work focused on the layout, it has been very enjoyable to get back to some model building.  My N Scale model of crane idler BCOL 6502 reached structural completion this week.  This photograph illustrates how I stitched the resin Minibox and styrene portions of the car together with a brass and styrene centre sill, and the side sill extensions:

View from the 'A' end of the car:

View from the 'B' end of the car:

The next step will be to apply primer and gloss coat so I can add the vertical rivet strips on the low sides.

I also made progress this week on a new MoW car which I have wanted to build for a long time.  I actually built the underframe and inside ends back in 2011 while working on cable car BCOL 6504, as they were copies of the same parts required for that car.  The underframe is a copy of the underside of the Intermountain 40 foot boxcar and will mate with the Intermountain underframe.  This new car also requires a reinforcing truss underneath the centre sill, which was a challenge to build:

Here are all of the components for the underframe including the side sills, 'B' end sill, Intermountain underframe and brake gear, and assembled centre truss:

At one end of the car is one third of the original carbody, which was a CNJ boxcar with 10'-0" high twelve panel welded sides.  As no such boxcar exists in N Scale, I elected to build the house from styrene, with individual strips comprising the welded outer panels.  This house portion of the car will utilize the Intermountain Dreadnought end and a portion of the diagonal panel roof:

I hope to get the sides assembled this weekend.

YES!  My wife have been flirting with the idea of buying an old Beetle.  We actually stopped and checked out an orange bug with a soft top just last weekend that was parked in a gas station lot with a "For Sale" sign on it.  It didn't have a price on it, though.

Congratulations!

Tim I love your MOW projects. Looking forward
To seeing this one take shape too,and when you tackle the crane.

Chris333, you bought it because it's a fine classic automobile. And don't feel bad about it being rough. It's a 1000 times better than the Karman Ghia I keep telling myself I'm restoring. If
You are not already, you should join us on the Samba. It's a very active and supportive VW forum.

We had one of those when I was a kid, and it was at least that rough.   Also hot as an oven in summer and cold as the North Pole in winter.

Hello all...
I was flattered to be video interviewed by Cody Grivno and David Popp, of Model Railroader Magazine at the National Train Show in Orlando this past weekend. It is aired in part two of the MR Video Plus segment of their National Train Show coverage. ( in fact, the T-TRAK was the ONLY layout featured in either part 1 or part 2).
Dave also mentioned to me that the Model Railroader staff is planning to do another segment on T-TRAK soon!...so more N scale exposure!

if you subscribe to Model Railroader online and also MR Video Plus, the video can be viewed here:

PS-(the fifty lbs. I've gained since the surgery are all too evident in the video!...EGADS!...i've got to get to work!)

@arbomambo - very cool to be interviewed and included.  Your module work deserves it.

You bought it because it is the cars equivalent to narrow gauge and tan blends in with your house .

Well, cool. I cut my mechanic teeth rebuilding VW pancakes... not because I wanted to, but because I had to if I wanted wheels. Overhauled three before deciding I'd had enough. That's a '68 or '69, close to the apex of the model ('67s are considered the "best"). Will you be able to find replacement bumpers?

"Rough"? I don't agree. From the outside it looks great, appears to be the original paint (color is right, at least), and, OMG, even has the hubcaps and they're in fine shape. My experience with VW paint of that era is it will polish right up. VW knew how to paint. Interior may have issues, but there is no sin in new upholstery and they reupholster well unless a front seat-back frame is broken, which can be fixed. Only issue with seats is if you were wanting to go full-boat original, which was impossible in my day. Maybe there's a source of the perforated vinyl seat covers now for the restorer market, but I'll bet they're not cheap.
