CESM announces new Alco Hi-ad Sideframes

Now available from our shapeways shop are Alco Hi-ad sideframes for 3-axle units. They fit the Atlas Dash 8-40CW locomotive trucks, which swap directly for the atlas C-628/C-630 trucks to make a prototypical Hi-ad equipped C-628/C-630. These trucks will also be used on the new C-636 from CESM.

You'll probably notice that they touch the shell of this C628. You will actually need to modify the jacking pads to use these, as the prototype has smaller jacking pads.

About that... I'm not sure how to make that one happen as the mechanism is a major sticking point. I was going to make a set of 3D printed frame halves but that never happened. It did happen but they didn't fit, I should say. Two sets of them.

Well, you know what they say...if at 2nd you don't succeed, or something along those lines.

What was the wheelbase of that KATO centercab switcher that ConCor used to import?

I'll probably have another go at it. Issue is that the C636 is still needing a lot of attention... I haven't started pre-orders yet. In addition, I'm gearing up for a run of both Darth Vader and Searchlight signals as well as a DCC++ base station. I'll get there when I get there.

Nope, it's going to be available to pre-order once I finish the prototype unit. Probably two weeks from today unless I can get it done this week as I'm going on vacation.

Doesn't quite look right for the C&O units.

Those look good. Hoping to be able one of your TEBU kits soon too. Any plans for doing corrective GP60 sideframes?

What is difference? The trucks on the C&O units were just stock Hi-ads so if there's an issue I will need to fix it.

I don't have any plans for that; I'm already backlogged with projects. If you're looking to get a TEBU, you better hop on it as I only have one set of etchings left in stock. After the atlas announcement this weekend I will probably order up some new stock if it isn't a genset as those etchings are also out of stock.

As far as I can tell, which isn't far, they seem to be correct. I cannot find a side-on view of one online to confirm, and I cannot get to my books until late tonight. My apologies David.

Not a problem. Here's the two pictures I worked from:

Great!  Looking forward to putting new shoes on a pair of Conrail (ex-RDG) C630's.

Here's a comparison to the real deal under preserved C630 #5308. They are very close and look great.  About the only thing that I see that stand out a bit are your springs are a "smidge" narrower.   5308 is close enough to me that if you need any measurements, I can get them.

As for the prototypes, the Hi-Ad was only used on the last 10 C630's built and all of the C636's.  They were not interchangeable with the Tri-mounts on the C628/C630's as the bolster location was different.

Here's the updated file. This is about as big as I can reasonably get the springs. I also thickened up the bar that is in front of the middle axle and made the two cutouts in the middle of the bolster component bigger. It's available on shapeways under the same model file.
