Sizing the WS "Home Sweet Home" Victorian house #BR4939

If you look at the WS site and their size sketch. The size listed is the whole thing. The basic box of the house is around 1.9x2.3".

And if you wait a few month WS might release it as a kit.

Are you speaking with reasonable sureness, or just with hope?

Resized it to be 3.3125" tall. Now crop out the roof over hang:


Comes out to 2.25" wide and 2.694" deep.

The previous dimensions I listed are just the body of the house, no roof.

Thanks for the dimensions Chris. So that would make it 36'-8" tall. That does seem like a bit much for a two story building, even allowing 3' for the raised floor and a tall first floor. (Unless the dimension is to the top of the chimney).

For $73 you'd think they'd SCALE it right.

For $73, I expect something that is scaled right, self propelled, has a working headlight, and can haul at least 20 freight cars on level track.  If it doesn't move, I expect it to have at least 8 stories and take up some real estate.

the dimension is to the top of the weathervane...it's correctly scaled. But if you don't like the way it looks among your other buildings, it won't be a tragedy if you don't purchase it.

Yeah, disposable income does figure into it.


And yes you have to "pick your poison" sometimes when it comes to where to invest the hobby dollar.

It's a pricey building.  But on many layouts it would be a "statement" structure.  I've found having a few statement structures on your layout... Well after a point a statement structure is probably going to give the layout more oomph than another loco or a few more pieces of rolling stock.

Quite a thread here. This house generated another long thread when it was released, with both pro and con sides too. I really want to have one for my New England layout, but the space I had planned for it is too small. Not sure where to stick it in now.

I bought one of these a few weeks ago, so I can offer a couple of opinions.
If you are trying to create a "neighborhood" scene using this house, you will probably be disappointed.  When placed next to most other scale houses, it is so big that it will appear to be out of scale, even if it is not.  The prototype probably belonged to a banker or successful merchant, and looks much better if it is placed alone on the layout, or even on the top of a hill, without other houses around it.
I don't remember exactly how much I paid for it, but it was about $50.  I use a formula where I take the cost of my time, per hour, and multiply this by how long it will take me to assemble and paint a kit.  In this case, I chose the assembled model.  Even if I am retired, I do have other interests so my time is worth something.

I do the same. 

I have many projects to do that can't be "farmed out".  So when I have an opportunity to save a bunch of time by purchasing something then I quite often do. 

I've assembled and painted many kits and it does take a lot of time to do it to an acceptable level.

I  do have a space set aside for "the mill owner's house", a large lot not shared with any other structures. I think the Branchline "Tower House" ( or "DuBois House") would be a good candidate, with its 19th century look and tower. Especially as in my time period the house would be somewhat run-down, not in prime real estate anymore in the older part of town right next to the original railroad track. A place turned into a boarding house and not well-maintained, on a weedy lot. In the late 1990's however, it will be reborn as a classy B&B, right across the street from the old former mill building which would be refurbished into a museum and local products mart. As a kit I could add the changes and details to achieve the "faded glory" look. The WS house would be a little too tony for this role.

If after 3 years there is no kit version, I doubt there will ever be one. Woodland Scenics does not release kits of all of their (ever increasing line of) pre-assembled buildings.
