Weekend Update 7/23/17

I don't know what Spectrum / Time Warner and its connection to Google is doing , but this is the second day I couldn't get through between 11 am ish and 11 pm ish .

This was a great railway week for me.  On Sunday I traveled to Toronto to deliver the McGrattan Memorial Train.  It was my first visit to Ontario and the first day was spent learning my way around the city, including the subways and trams which were quite good.  On Tuesday I met up with fellow BCR modeller and Railwire member Craig Aguiar-Winter (craigolio) and we ventured down to Roundhouse Park, site of the CPR's 32-stall John Street roundhouse.  It houses the Steam Whistler Brewery, the Toronto Railway Museum, and the Rec Room restaurant.

The museum's collection includes CN Northern 4-8-4 No. 6213:




and a collection of diesel locomotives including CN GP-7 No. 4803:




and some rolling stock.  What better place for Craig and I to reminisce about our friend Puddington than in front of a CP Cape solarium car:




We sat down to an enjoyable dinner at the Rec Room, with the railway collection and Toronto skyline in front of us and the CN tower above, and Craig showed me an impressive array of N Scale models including his complete consist of the Pacific Starlight Dinner Train:




On Wednesday Mike McGrattan's mum Lois drove me up to Peterborough to meet Margaret and Sam, and I presented them with the Memorial Train.  Here it is on the Kanto Subdivision layout which Mike and Sam built:

At one point we skirted the shore of lake Ontario, which is unusually high at the moment.  Somewhere across all that water is a country called the U.S.A.!




My last day was spent visiting with some fellow BCR modellers, and an evening walk along the waterfront:




Now back in Vancouver, and ready for a weekend of work on the layout.

How are Margaret and Sam holding up?  I know it's been more than a year, but still...

Love that Toronto roundhouse area.  Is the brewery still there?  Also, hope you had time to hit the Hockey Hall of Fame!

Hi Dave:

I won't lie - the last year has been very hard on them.  They are very grateful for the warm support from the model railway community, including the Railwire.  Margaret will be returning to work this fall and Sam will be starting at a high school specializing in the Performing Arts as he has developed an interest and talent in music and drama.  These will be their focus going forward.

Yes, the Whistle Stop Brewery is still there.  I didn't get to the Hockey Hall Of Fame this time; maybe next visit.  Getting to and staying in Toronto is very expensive during the summer, and I had to watch my pennies as I am not paid during the summer months.

Here is a recent video of my layout - shot with a Looxcie HD camera (based on some recommendations from a post I submitted to the Photography section.)

Overall, I am quite pleased with the camera. The colors are true to life. The focus range is about what I'd expect for N Gauge trains. The focus on close objects is a little soft, but I wasn't expecting a macro-focus capability on the camera.

If any of you have experience with the Looxcie camera, I'll be adding a few questions on the Photography section in a little bit. Take a look and let me know if you have the answers I need.

Nice quality video .. who makes those signals?

The signals in my video are a Greenmax item. They are non-working signals. The part # is 2782. The package contains 5 signals. The description is a "pack of 5 Fully Finished 3-Aspect Non Working Signals". I bought them off the Internet a while ago (can't remember where...probably eBay or Amazon).

To make the signals with two heads, I used 2 single head signals. On one of them, I cut off the top portion of the signal pole above the signal head. Then I popped the signal pole out of the base and cut a section off the bottom portion of the hole (to get the bottom head at a lower height). On the second one, I cut off the signal head and glued it on to the first one.
