I'll let you know.  Looking at it, it may be too large/tall and overpower the layout, which is only 54" x 30".  We'll be keeping the structures small.

Thanks,

That is pretty small.  I'll try to remember to ask Aly if she likes it this weekend (I'm at work presently).  I'll show her the picture on the previous page.  Stay tuned.

Off topic, but this story fits well here.  Because my step-son is spending Thanksgiving with his father and my wife is working, Aly and I took the opportunity for a Daddy-Daughter Day.  Aly's been wanting to do a picnic and a train ride (like we did on the Wilmington & Western last year), but the W&W was closed today.  Strasburg Rail Road, here we come!

Here's Aly on her first train ride of the day:

Our ride- Strasburg RR No. 3.:

Aly's second train ride of the day.  These little pedal cars are cool, and she needed no assistance:

Aly on our third train ride.  The forty-five minute trip to Paradise and back.  While at Leaman Place, we were not only treated to the steam locomotive running around our train to pull us back to Strasburg but an Amtrak train also blew past:

Our locomotive for the day.  We rode behind former CN No. 89.  Sorry for the poor composition, but I was managing a five-year-old at the platform while the train was coming in.  Safety first.

On the train, we were treated with carolers, a two-piece horn orchestra, and Santa and Ms. Claus!  Santa gave Aly an ornament:

Aly and our coach, Philadelphia & Reading car no. 92, "Susquehanna."

Aly was very good on our excursion, and I enjoyed our Daddy-Daughter Day immensely.  So, I took her over to the nearby hobby store and bought her an N scale building and an Ice Cream Truck for her layout.  Pics on that soon, but we'll likely be taking apart the layout this weekend, to begin gluing down the subroadbed and Unitrack.  More later.   Aly approves of this post and adds her emoji plan: :D  8) :) :tommann:

DFF,

Would she be interested in one of these?

@jpec,

I showed Aly the building you have, and she likes it.  So, since she's interested, what do we need to do?

DFF, what a great story and accompanied by pictures too!  I wish my kid would do that with me but alas when you reach teenage years it is no longer cool to hang out with your parents.  All his Conrail locos are gathering dust.  :( :( :(

(So I'm living vicariously through you!  :D)

Same here.  I just boxed up all my sons items.  Tore up all the track from the board, hasn't run trains in probably 6 months.  :(

Sorry to hear that, guys, but Aly's only five years old.  It's only a matter of time before she goes from wanting to spend time with Daddy to being ashamed to know me, so I'll enjoy it while I can.  What a better way to spend Black Friday, huh?  With the exception of one hobby store, we did no shopping.  ;)

Nice to see a father-daughter team enjoy the nice weather outside and railroads (large and small).  I can almost smell the sweet smell of coal smoke from that engine.  What a fun experience!  I spend my Friday raking leaves (it was a nice sunny Fall day here).

I didn't realize that Strasburg had a live steam layout as well.  Which brings up a question I've wondered about for years, and which probably doesn't have an answer:

At what point, gauge-wise, does a live-steam model railroad become a simply a narrow gauge railroad?

Well, you're forgetting the two-foot gauges, e.g., Maine narrow gauge railroads.  But, let's leave this discussion here or take it to another thread.

Back on topic, the night before last, Aly and I went to the home center and picked up some 1" foam pieces to build up the subroadbed to allow for the lower riverbed.  I glued those sheets of foam on, and it seemed as if that adhesive had set sufficiently last night.  In the next few days, I hope to begin gluing the Woodland Scenics risers and the Unitrack to the layout.  Then, it will be on to building the landforms, which I know Aly is looking forward to.  She is excited about the planned mountain, tunnel, and river.

The risers have been glued into place and are pinned until the adhesive (Loctite Power Grab) sets.  I was going to use the same adhesive to glue down the track, but Unitrack is hollow underneath.  Since that would require huge globs of adhesive, I think I'll look into double-stick tape to hold the track down, unless someone has a better alternative for securing Unitrack.
