Well, it was a nice, wholesome thread there for a while....  :)

Your little Aly looks like a wonderful kid; I know, as I have one too!

I know - all scales matter and we all have to get along.  :) But the H0er thing was TRWs hot topic for a while.  Well, it started as some whining but it is all good now.  The "tolerated" statement is just a part if the inside joke.  I love you all!  Group-hug!  ;)

My dear @peteski , I was referring to a South Park song:

I know it's all in jest.  I'm having fun with the word HOer.   :D

Back to the topic it is wonderful to see this layout progress and hopefully we get a taste of scenery soon! Absolutely a great hobby to share between generations and time you will always remember.  :D

UPDATE: Terraforming has begun.  Unfortunately, though, I ran out of adhesive, so we're done for the night.  Obviously, this is only roughed in, and there is much more fill and carving to do.  But, the tunnels are in place and the train has sufficient clearance.  (Sorry for the poor lighting in the picture, but I was too lazy to disconnect the wiring and pull Aly's layout out from under mine.)

I don't think I've ever seen 3mm or ZZ scales mentioned.  1:100 is a common architectural scale, so 3mm would be easy to model in, and N standard gauge would scale perfectly as 3 foot narrow gauge.  Standard gauge models would be a bigger problem, but dual gauge track wouldn't be any harder than HO/HOn3.

IMO, ZZ isn't a legitimate scale. It was created by Bandai some years back, and they're the only ones who make it. The sets include a couple of Japanese "shorty" commuter trains. They're more like toys.

AFAIK, 3mm is a scale used by a few companies for static (non-functional) model trains for display. I've only ever seen a few of them.

I'm making a mental note to myself to not only buy some more adhesive and lightweight spackling tonight, but I need to get four single-track tunnel portals ordered.  Hopefully, I won't have clearance issues with the passenger cars.  I was able to get the Woodland Scenics' portals to work on the Virginia Central, and I ran passenger cars on that layout, although the curves weren't quite as sharp.  So, I'll hunt for those same portals, and we'll see what happens.

Also, Aly wants a road bridge across the creek, and I'm hoping that I can salvage one of the highway bridges that I scavenged from the expansion to the Seaboard Central 2.0.  That may be a challenge, because those bridges were built for a 2" clearance and the creek is set only 1" below where the road surface will be, i.e, that may make them not only too tall but too long.  I'd really like to use the highway bridge that I scratchbuilt a few years ago to capture the look of the concrete highway bridges in the Carolinas.  I put a lot of work into that, and it sure would be nice to use it.  That bridge is surprisingly durable, despite all of the tiny pieces of styrene that it required.  I'm not worried at all about Aly breaking it.

Coincidentally, after we finished working the landforms last night, Aly wanted to repopulate the layout again.  One of the first items that she grabbed was the SAL station that I scratchbuilt last year.  I look forward to making use of that, too.  Oh, and @Chris333 will be happy to know that Aly also wants to make sure that we use "Foam Depot," although last night she wanted it to be "a house."  ;)

Maybe chop down some cheap double-track portals?

An excellent idea.  If the singles won't work (and I can't trim away the fouling spot(s)), I'll do just that.

Thanks,

Over the past few months, not a lot of scenery work has happened, but I did buy Aly an NCE Power Cab DCC system for her birthday.  This allowed us to move Aly’s layout out from under Daddy’s layout.  At her request, we moved her layout to the finished side of our basement.  Thanks to @Dave V for the heads-up on the ridiculously inexpensive ACL Champion print that now resides over Aly’s layout.

Aly has decided on winter and a snow scene, so we’ve been experimenting with Woodland Scenics’ snow.  Stay tuned.
