Cells getting decent shots

I've found that my cell camera will get places no other 'normal' camera will. With some apps I have to change the photos, I've managed to get some halfway-decent photos with it. Just curious if others are trying similar things?

Being a picture taker and not a photographer, what is a cell camera? I have this wild vision of you being locked up in a cell under surveillance, making models and holding them up to the camera, and then the screws slipping the prints under your door.

I think he means a camera in the portable communication devices: cell phones, smart phones, tablets . ..

They do fit in places other larger (DSLR) cameras can't go and because of their design, they have fairly close focusing range and fairly large dept of field.

I was guessing that was the case but then I thought mmmm, maybe this is something I have yet to discover better get some clarification.

I still like my actual SLR for railfanning, but only because it has a telephoto lens, and I'm less afraid of losing it.

The ongoing "space race" between mobile device manufacturers has done great things for cell phone camera technology.

It still bugs the sh*t out of me to see people holding their frigging iPads up to take pictures, though.

I adjusted the color balance and sized it down.

The DoF isn't perfect, but I was just shooting in full auto.

Still better than a lot of the SLRs out there without a tripod and long exposure!
Where cells really come into their own is how you can get them places a 'normal' camera would never fit!

My picture in the M³T article in N Scale Magazine was taken with my five-year-old Samsung Galaxy S3.  Haha!  I gave up on my digital camera years ago.

I noticed the DOF problem a lot and the one camera app that seems to fix that is really made to amplify it. People want their background blurred I guess. But the camera lets you save both together.

I seem to recall seeing that photo in the past Chris. Very nice.
The long DOF goes a long way (pun intended) to making N scale layout look like it is large scale (or even 1:1 scale).

And you are right, when taking portrait-style photos (where the face is the main subject and close to the camera) blurred background gives the most pleasing photo. I guess that way your eyes are fully focused on the face in the photo.

In the camera under settings it is called "Selective Focus".

Hmmm...can't seem to find this function in a S7.

I forget the specifics, but when I was thinking to get a new phone the S6 and S7 both had lower grade features from the S5.
