Chris's N Scale Crew Speeder build

Early in the build , but it works , so it is a thing . Thanks Chris .

I got the early bird special that was before Chris beefed and expanded the dimensions .

I widened the body by adding the planks on either side of the front and back faces . Compare with the last image in my Railwire gallery . The reason for the bloat is to allow the shell to sit low without having the wheels hitting with the designed in horizontal slop .

Originally the drive train extended past the body . I loped that section off and put the wheels up to the next spot , Looked good , fit good , sat there spinning its wheels . I added weight and the same happened . After a long while and now powered by a ZTRAK Snail controller I turned it turtle realized exactly how dumb I was . The wheels were rotating opposite of each other . You need to go two places to get the thing to go any place .

I added top shell side stiffeners . I lopped off the 4 floor bosses that I think were carry overs from the HOn30 utilizing the Kato 11-105 chassis . Then I started adding some .O30 plastic , some gray , some white as both a floor and a mounting surface for the chassis TU something or another ( I will correct later ) . These were glued to the top of the ledger beams on the inside of the sides . I created a squared birds beak on the front if the chassis to lock in that end and a 00-90 screw through the now empty axle slot , into a piece of a Walthers HO Roundhouse .( I just like the thick plastic for this purpose ) .

I added .010 PB wire on each side between the inside wheel faces and the frame to aid the pick up . One of the chassis screws on each side hold the looped wire in place . I am still fine tuning the PU , and will test weighting effects .

I can't even believe it printed. Did you drill out the handrail holes or did they print open? 

BTW that thing hanging down on the rear is a bending jig for the handrails (for the HOn30 version)

Looks like you're forging ahead!  I love these kinds of locos.   I ordered two but won't see them until I get back from vacation a little over a week from now.   So I guess that's going to finally have me substantively participating in a thread.

I'll be making my own chassis for this one.  Maybe one DC and one DCC.  If the shell appearance will tolerate dual gauges (N and Nn3) without looking too silly, as Nkalanaga (sp?) suggested it might, that will be an option for no more effort than swapping the four wheels.  Pull out whatever wheel is in it and swap for the other. Done.

In anticipation, something to ponder between water skiing and heavy duty relaxation, do you have the inside dimensions?

I am intrigued with this little creature... may have to get one or two for myself for my MofW right-of-way crews so they can get between the work site and their housing.  Really a nice looking car!!!  Thanks so much for designing it!!!

The hole dimples are there . This is not all that fragile Chris , I was thinking FUD was brittle , I was wrong . If it wasn't for all the handling needed to power it I wouldn't have needed the crown brace . I have gobs of fud models and this was my ice breaker . What was a surprise to me is how fast the Krazy Glue likes to stick to FUD , Must be the micro poorasstity of the FUD . Love it when a pair of parts come together . I was wondering what those wide boards at the rear were for . I'll clip it off . I narrowed the flanges and tread width .

Don't know much about FUD but with CA, the LESS porosity the mating surfaces the quicker it kicks so it must either be the smoothness of the FUD surface or the lack of porosity.

response ... I worded it that way because this way many people who have different ways of finishing or want to read about Chris's Speeder have a single thread to read . Thanks for asking , and add your own photos , comments , and questions about yours or any Chris's Speeder centered thoughts .

Being that this IS The Railwire we enjoy our God given right to talk as if we are real people N gauged in real conversations , and as such it is to be expected , anticipated , and looked forward to OT comments and thread drifts .

BTW I posted the HOn30 model to their Facebook page. Got 70 "likes", but not a single sale. Someone asked me to scale in up to On30, came in at $80 bucks

The stuff that David Cutting used on his HT-C truck is called "Black Hi-Def Acrylate".

First product I've ever seen with it and beats FUD completely; isn't brittle, same resolution if not even better.   If you run into brittleness issues like with the footboards you might want to try it.

Not completely.  It has issues too, particularly with warping on larger pieces.
