The person who uploaded the file can order HDA with the supports still attached (like in my photo) anyone else who orders can only get it with them removed.

The surface of the part is nice, but the part is soft to me. The same part in FUD was printed so there was minimal support wax so the fuzzy lines were very minimal. Something like this loco body will have support wax no matter how it is printed so HDA might turn out better overall.

Well, not knowing what I'm doing.....

I ordered the black acrylate.  Hopefully Shapeways won't mess it up.  I'll post when it comes in.

If the black is tougher, that will be better for a couple of reasons.

1.  Handrails- obviously.

2.  My plan is to partially hold this thing together by running a screw through the fuel tank somehow.  Won't know till I get it.

As for painting, I have an air eraser that can roughen it up a bit.

Looking forward to building this and adding a decoder this time.

Thanks for the order. I saw what made them cancel Randy's order and I haven't fixed it yet. If your model does get rejected when they go to check it I will make a third version and fix it for real this time.

Hey David,

If my model is rejected and you need to make an adjustment....  (although at this moment, I haven't gotten an email...)

Could you make one last (I promise) adjustment?

The grill on the roof in front of the sand on the nose should be flat.

It's not a big deal since I will likely cut the whole area out and add an etched metal grill.

But if you are going to make a change... you might as well get that last thing.

But also.... if it is too much trouble don't worry about it.  Like I said, I would probably use an etched part anyway.

I really can't wait to build one of these.

I cancelled my order because the shell and the walkway were cancelled by Shapeways for whatever problem you described.

The fuel tank appeared to move forward- but I obviously want to keep all together.

Let us know when you want us to try again.

same here, second try cancelled by Shapeways.

If anybody is hung up on handrails, I'll be making mine out of soldered brass and can do others.   While you could do these as etched, the artwork and first setup runs on etchings are darn expensive.   I don't know if that Acetal Plastic has got to the point where you could do handrails or not with a .010-.015 cross section, but it's pretty easy to do with wire and they are very, very durable.    I should be able to do all the soldered handrails and grabs for around $30 a kit, and remember I put them on AFTER assembly and painting of anything that is under or behind them.

I've updated the model files, increasing wall thicknesses on the roof and all of the steps. It should print now unless Shapeways finds another thin spot. I'll keep my fingers crossed. The links are still the same; I just updated the associated model file.

Cool.   I just don't want anybody to get stuck trying this due to handrails, and the RP ones I've seen so far have been either too thick or too fragile. 

It really looks like they imitated EMD styles all the way around, you might be able to cobble in some Atlas parts with some planning at least for the side rails.   This thing has more of an EMD flavor to it than just the truck.

It probably would be nice.  I'm planning on making 2 of these by the time I'm done.  So I would need two sets of windows.

Also, I plan to write an article on this project (already started).  So maybe that will generate more interest once the article is out (which of course takes forever).


Can anybody else out there say if they might be interested.

Of course, if Kato re-stocks these trucks, then I'm sure there would be a lot more takers.
