Might want to see about moving this thread into the Layout Engineering Report forum. Might get a bit more attention there (which is deserved).

I've been looking forward to an update on this layout.  However I think it's not fair to the rest of us to have to compete with such a talented artist when it comes to background and sky painting.  Going forward I think it should be decreed, that for your backdrop scenes, you should be forced to employ the neighborhood kids, ages 5 and below preferably with finger paints.

Seriously, it's looking great so far.  I'm both dreading and looking forward to what you do with that hardboard mountain backdrop.

Scott

I think the decree should say that it is to be done in the dark, left handed assuming the OP is right handed).   :D

Sorry. I just want to paint... :D
I've started painting the backdrop.

Just regular artist acrylics.

It's important to have a good original photo to paint from.
The colors are mostly midtones at this point.

The details are being added.
A lot of work left to do.

Yeah I'm just going to have to hate you.  ;)
It's looking fantastic (like we didn't know that was gonna happen) really looking forward to the finished product.

There's a prototype for everything.
If you can't make it perfect, make it adjustable.

 :D :D :D
I test painted a mountain...
  ;)
I use regular acrylics and WS earth pigments.

First an ochre wash.

Then a light wash of burnt sienna.

And finally (?) gray stone earth pigments.
As it is supposed to look Colorado-ish, I hope this is the way to go.
It will lighten when dry.
Then some dry brushing.

 :D thanks Chuck!
I'm trying to match some photos I have of the Colorado mountains.
The color lightened a bit when it dried.

The color lightened a bit when it dried.

So will you just add some more dark washes, or will you have to do something else?

Thanks,
Scott

I'd typically, if happy with the overall color, just apply a thinned alcohol/India ink wash to bring out the details and shadows of the rock faces.

Looks great, but is it still removable so you can paint the track and ballast?  :scared:
