That's a nice layout!  My only criticism (besides the cramped track) are the puffball trees.  Otherwise I like it a lot!

hey .. nothing wrong with puffball trees :)

You could always do one of those Byron Henderson layouts and put it on casters so while it's "not an island" it can still be moved around some and it really wouldn't matter if your space if finished finished or not.

This is what MR is doing on project layouts, and I really like the idea. of being able to roll the layout around to work on it or even to improve lighting for photos.

Also, take a look at the Heart of Georgia layout, http://hogrr.blogspot.com/. Quick and simple made from a few 1x3s, 2x2s and one sheet of foam.

It certainly can increase the minimum radius with that style of plan, but, photogenically, its got problems.  It looks like it's tough to shoot a picture without the fascia in the picture.  I really think I'm okay with another island-style layout.  Heck, I've lived with this last one for five years.

Thanks,
DFF

@Chris333,

You nailed it.  Exactly what I had in mind with the branchline.

This is why my ideal layout in any scale is about 12 x 12 feet...  This is a size I still believe I can scenic in a reasonable amount of time with a minimum of compromises.  You big basement-monster guys amaze me with the speed and scope with which you work, but I work too slowly and too "fussy" to do what you guys do.

Of course, once you go Supertrees you can never go back.

That one word... "Compromise".

That's what it comes down to, between the time investment and the monetary cost trying to scenic a layout to a degree that it really sparkles with static grass, great ballasting job, all the buildings built–weathered and detailed and of course for many... Realistic trees– Much of this is simply prohibitive on a large layout.

First draft!  This shows the layout situated in the room and leaves space for the existing workbench and an On30 shadow box layout:

Okay, okay, before everyone starts telling me that I should go around the walls, blah, blah, blah, let me just add that there is a water heater that may be fouling the bottom right corner of this layout as it is.  There's also a sewer pipe, clean out, and water meter at top left.  Besides, a shelf layout will either require running through each scene twice or go all of the way around the room.  Neither is preferred.

You should go around the wa....  :D

Honestly I like it, and the only reason I was against an island design was it would take space away from what you want to accomplish in On30.

If you have space to fit that and a narrow gauge layout you are happy with this plan looks great. Basically an HO version of your door layout.  :)

Can you rough in where you invision your O scale benchwork?

Excited to see progress on this...  :)

I've got no room to work.  I need the Seaboard Central 2.0 to go to its new home first.   :)

I'm not 100% sure, because I haven't developed that track plan yet.  My thoughts are all the way at the right end of the room, where the current workbench that runs practically wall to wall resides.  I've long thought about removing that huge workbench that the previous homeowners abandoned and scaling it down to a small desk area.  That could fit in the corner to the left of the bump out at the bottom middle portion of the room drawing.
