Meanwhile, as the lightweight spackling is drying, this happened: Seaboard System F7A No. 116 returned to the rails.  With this engine practically complete, I’ll get started on F7B No. 117:

Terraforming is complete and I applied a base coat of my sandy color.  This is the Sandhills, you know.  You might be able to distinguish the sand trap, which is still raw, white lightweight spackling.  A corner of the green will be on this side of the bunker, between the cart path and the aisle.  This, admittedly, is crammed in there, but I think it can acceptably imply the golf course.



I’m excited by this, because it’s been almost five years of staring at this sliver of land, not knowing what to do with it.

I don’t think it’s too cramped; just add some scrub around the cart path and a couple trees and it will fit perfectly. Are you going to put the pin in the corner on the layout or no?

Thanks, Sawyer.  I definitely want to put the pin on the layout.  Brutal pin placement, but it’ll help with setting the scene.  Agreed on the scrub and trees.

And, like that, the cart path was concrete.    I think the lighter color also makes the cart path a little less obviously crammed in there.  Grass is next.

When I was a kid we got busted riding our skateboards down a sloping green at the country club. The guy chased us down the street in the golf cart and made us give him our phone numbers. We all gave fake numbers. He made use repeat them. All got it except one. He started crying and said they were so poor they didn't have a phone. Ah good times.

Still think it needs some fencing and a couple of No Trespassing signs.    Even in the 60's, no railroad wants that much exposure to liability.

I’ll probably pass on the fencing, because (1) it’s not on the prototype, and (2) I don’t want to entirely block photo possibilities.  Trees and shrubs will do fine.

Allen may win the award for the shaving suggestion.  What I did to begin forming the green wasn’t a razor or clippers.  Instead, I went at it with a sanding stick.  By sanding the ground foam, it not only shortened the “grass,” it also seemed to lighten it.  I want to touch up the ground foam where it’s too bare and do a second sanding.
