Looking great @davefoxx !  You must have some hand cramps after cutting openings in that thick-a$$ .060 sheet :^0

  Frank

Thanks, @amato1969!  You aren't kidding.  That 0.060" styrene is tough cutting.   It's one thing to score and snap, but it's quite a different thing to try to do precise cuts on the interior of a sheet.  Boy am I glad that's over with.

It definitely seems like having have done a "practice" N scale one has really helped.

True.  In fact, that's how and why this project hasn't come to a screaming thirteen-month halt in progress to figure out the next step, like I did with that N scale version.  I literally have accomplished in a week on the HO scale model what took perhaps fifteen to eighteen months on the N scale model due to procrastination and a lack of confidence.

Thanks,

You didn't measure window openings on the diagonal to confirm that they were "square"?

Sure we did.  Same as measuring the case of a cabinet for square.  I was referring to cutting materials, e.g., trimwork, where it's much more precise to mark the cut by holding the piece in place than to try to measure for what you need and then also measure the piece of trim.  Those two measurements invite error.

Hip rafters in.  Of course, there’s still the dormer to build, including its hip roof, but that must wait for the roof sheathing to go on first.  I also added a portion of the ridge beam.  I didn’t run this across the entire top, because there are two chimneys that exit the roof on the other side of the rafters where the ridge beam stops.

That looks really good.
Maybe it has been asked/said before....What's happening to the N scale bulding?

I think it's on Aly's layout, if I recall.

Thanks, Thomas!  Yes, as Bryan said, the N scale layout is on Aly's layout.  However, it's currently on loan to the Carolina Sandhills Lines for the purpose of reverse engineering.  Seriously, it has been a big help to pick that model up to see how I solved construction dilemmas before.  Unfortunately, the rafters that I just built are completely concealed, so the model was no help there.  Thankfully, I went back to my old Photobucket photos and found construction photos.

Next up, the brick ledge at the bottom of the walls and then sheathing the roof.  Warren Calloway was kind enough to send me a photo of the station in 1970 that I'm going to use, which looks completely different from the N scale model which truly is decorated more as the station exists today (except the roof).  The walls will be white with a dark green section under the windows.

Ah, I see. So still in use, that's good.

The brick ledge at the foundation and the first piece of roof sheathing are in.

Very nice!  1978 is even closer to my modeling era of 1983-86.

Real good progress made on the roof.  Three sides are sheathed.

The final main section of roof is sheathed.  Barely visible are a few spots of Tamiya white putty that need to be sanded down, to leave a smooth surface for the decals I plan to use for the roof shingles.  I’m going to try to use the same decal artwork that I used for the N scale model, assuming I can properly resize it to HO.

Obviously, the dormer’s hip roof still needs to be built.  I also have to shorten the height of the two top windows, which was expected.  Until the roof was sheathed, I wasn’t sure where to set the bottom of those windows.  I’ll cut the windows and use styrene to fabricate a new sill for each window.

I resized the dormer windows and added new sills.  I decided to glue those windows in, not only to hold them in place, but because it would be difficult to get up in there once the roof was complete.  After studying Warren Calloway’s photo, I decided to glue all of the windows in, because they are white, like the walls.  I’ll need to mask off the doors, because they’re dark green.  But, that should be pretty easy.  Now, I’m working on the dormer hip roof.
