Bummer.   Good know, but I’m wondering which Krylon crystal clear?

“Colormaxx clear, flat crystal clear”.  Or.  “Colormaster acrylic crystal clear with durable cover max technology”.

I haven’t had any problems with the latter.  I haven’t used the former, yet.

Thanks

Steve,

It’s Krylon Crystal Clear Acrylic Coating 1303A.  I’m going to chalk this one up as an old can.  It’s the same can that I used to seal the decal shingles on the SAL station in 2016.  I chose to avoid Dullcote on this project so far, because of the reaction with alcohol, although I was going to use that as the very last step.

I've had success from Scalecoat II in the spray bomb, so I found a vendor that allegedly has paint in stock.  I ordered spray cans of Santa Fe Red, Conrail Blue, Flat Clear, Satin Clear, and Railroad Tie Brown.  I'm going to try to use the Santa Fe and Conrail colors as the Seaboard Central Colors, because they should be easier to reasonably match from different manufacturers down the road, if Scalecoat II becomes unavailable.  The red isn't critical, but the blue needs to come close to the blue dot decals that I got from the custom decal maker.  The Railroad Tie Brown is for my track.

I also ordered some decals from Microscale to be able to completely reletter the box car.  Since I have to completely repaint the car, I'll probably just paint it for the Seaboard Central with no patches.  Hopefully, I'll receive these materials in the next week, so it can be next weekend's project.

Ah. Thanks for that. It appears what I’m using isn’t the same then.

FWIW, MR used GN Big Sky Blue and Amtrak Red (supposedly from Polly Scale) for their Seaboard Central heritage unit.

Dave, I am wondering where you found Scalecoat II in stock.
I hope you have it in this coming week. Good for you!
I have been waiting for just short of 2 months now for my paint to arrive.
I searched and searched but only found 1 source.
Any info will be duly appreciated.

Yes, that’s correct for the heritage unit.  The blue on the original locomotive decorated in the 1980s had a much lighter blue, e.g., the middle engine in this picture:

Since, I’m actually free to do whatever I want, since most people wouldn’t have a clue and there is no real prototype, I went for a color blue between both of MR’s blues and a color that would be easily matched: Conrail blue.  As for the red, I went with what was available (hopefully) and went with another red that was close enough for this colorblind guy: ATSF red.  If it turns out that this vendor doesn’t have this paint, the search will continue and include Amtrak red.

@glakedylan (Gary),

I supposedly got mine from MinuteMan Scale Models, but I haven’t yet confirmed it’s actually in stock.  Their website let me place the order, but I’m not holding my breath.  I’ve already had one order in the last few weeks be cancelled by a vendor, so I’ll let you know.  The order was confirmed, but that clearly was the automated response upon placing the order.

Changing gears, since the SC boxcar is on hold, I returned to my street project.  I finished carving the sidewalk joints on my styrene sheets and glued the sidewalks to the street’s piece of styrene.  The sidewalks are 0.080” and the streets are 0.060”.  The 0.060” snugs up nicely to Code 83 rails at railroad crossings, allowing the rails to be just ever so slightly above the “roads” for electrical continuity and easier track cleaning.

Well, we’ll probably find out this week when the order ships or it doesn’t.  :P  Glad you’re finally getting your order.  That’s a long time to wait for paint.  Projects just come to a screaming halt, huh?

Thanks,

I got the primer coat on.  Rustoleum Light Gray Primer is my go-to color for aged asphalt.  Unfortunately, my last can wasn’t enough, so I ran out to the hardware store.  I could not get the usual, so I picked up two cans of Flat Gray Primer.  Of course, it’s darker, but life goes on.  This road will just be newer than the other road on the layout.  :P

Once this sets, I’ll mask and paint the sidewalks.  Hopefully, this evening.  You’ll notice that I severed the road up to that warehouse.  I got tired of fumbling with this large piece of styrene, and that floppy section didn’t help.  It’ll be easy to reconnect it, and I’ll have a couple of other joints in the styrene roads to camouflage anyway.

Looks good Dave.
Talking about joins in asphalt roads.  There are many around me that are just asphalt on top of concrete and (aka blacktop) so a relatively straight crack always occurs in the new road where a joint is beneath which they fill up with tar, a very shiny black (relatively).
Just an idea.

Following along Dave like this new Ho version.

Think your Conrail blue and ATSF red will look great together.
