Chris,

Did you design that boiler and cab?  Or was it scanned or downloaded?  I'm considering an AnyCubic photon printer and am curious about your software/design setup.  Seems like it would make HOn30 a LOT easier, that is if the learning curve isn't too steep...  I'm also pretty much an iPad user.

Thanks,

Wayne

I designed it myself with Sketchup, but as you can see the circle segment number is low so the boiler looks like a stop sign.  Never even seen an iPad, but Sketchup might work on it.

Some people say quarries are crystal clear and you can see right to the bottom, but I think many older quarries tend to look very dark. I was going for something like this:
/>
This video shows a crazy bright blue green color:
/>
They all tend to have a green tint, but some are like a tan turquoise/sea foam tint and some are like dark forest green. This flooded area is where the Carbon Limestone railroad once ran:

I also think if you walked close up to the edge in person it may look dark, but if you flew over like the drone you'd see it was really clear.

Since it is just a plastic sheet sat in place I will work with different colored under layers that can change out till I'm happy  :)

Great work overall!!! Very inspiring i must say. If I had the space, seeing threads like this, i would consider a 2nd deck  (or something) having narrow gauge in a different era than what i model (late 60s mainline).
Very nice work on the print for the locomotive!

Thanks for posting!

And just to see if I even liked it I printed this body out:

Based on a Bradford Bordell and Kinzua locomotive

Chris,

I like it!  Did you ever say what era your layout covers?

Well I have a bunch of older locos so I'm thinking like 1915ish. I plan to have more horses/wagons than cars. Locos without air brakes or generators. By around the 1925's my little Heisler and Climax would have been upgraded to much larger locos. And as easy as diesels are in HOn30 I just don't want any and that would have bumped it up to around 1935ish. So sorta around 1915ish final answer  :D

Chris,

Can you point to a tutorial where I could learn the basics of making a boiler shape?  I see cylinders of varying diameters, that's pretty easy.  But that skewed conical section that connects the larger diameter cylinder to the smaller forward section puzzles me.

Thanks,

Wayne

Wayne, yes but I'm at work right now. I'll get back later. Could send you the file too if you want.

OK to try and answer. I first had a 2D drawing I made in AutoCAD so I keep that open to grab dimensions off of while typing them into Sketchup. Once you draw a circle and extrude it you can then offset the face to make the bands. Extrude the band and then offset smaller to make the smokebox.

To make the offset part I just made the two separate straight parts and then connected them one line at a time. Since this was just a test to see if I liked it. So the circle segments are a low number and therefore there were less lines to connect. If I were to do this loco "for real" I would probably have to scale the model up draw it and then size it back down.

Hope that makes some sort of sense.

This is my sketch in AutoCAD

And here it is in Sketchup:

Thanks, Chris.  I'll take a look.  Hopefully I can get the hang of this.

The corner between the quarry and the mill got some scenery. This is the general view between them. The line goes behind the mill over a short bridge and then get hidden behind some trees for "several miles" before popping out at the quarry.
