Random... the flour mill... I just joined a Ohio River & Western Facebook page (hey it's good for something) and just saw photos of a narrow gauge siding to a flour mill in Cumberland, Ohio that produced 100 barrels of flour a day.

I was sick for about a week  but feeling better now. I go these sections fastened down and the track is glued directly to foam in this area. Got the ties hand painted and weathered. Even tried out some ballast. I will paint the rail later.

Another flour mill this time in Caldwell, OH with rail access on the OR&W.

In 1911 the narrow gauge OR&W built a siding to the mill to supply boiler coal and service flour production at 50 barrels per day. By 1923 the mill was gone.

Interesting that the insurance maps list weather or not there was a night watchman at the mill, there wasn't.


In other news I can't seem to drag myself down to the basement    It's still cold out, I was sick, but now I'm fine...

So back when we we're talking about the flour mill...  The covered bridge is only about 45min from me so today I drove up there. Funny there is a small parking lot at the bridge, but a bunch of no trespassing signs. Fortunately for me I can't read  So this is down under the bridge:


Straight ahead if you hop the rocks up the creek you start to hear falling water. I didn't know there was a water fall, but it sorta looked like it in old photos. Plus the flour mill was there. As I rounded the corner of the creek:

And just to the right is a house that sits where the mill was and a bunch of no swimming and no trespassing signs (guessing    )  I didn't go up to the damn because that would have been right in their back yard and the wrap around rear porch was only about 50' from the water. What a great place to live! So my waterfall looks nothing like this, but oh well and now I know what is around the bend in the creek. Seeing as how there is no trail I wonder how many people have no idea of the waterfall just feet from the bridge.

Very cool, Chris, and a great find, despite the "assumed" trespassing .  But, I can't help thinking of this:

Just got through the whole dam    thread to date, and I have to say, you do amazing work.  I've always been a fan of the Maine two footers and although your's is not set in the north east it still captures the feel of those small trains and small industries.  Well done, can't wait to see more.

Hey look I did something!

After hopping rocks in the creek it got me itching to work on the layout. I went to another waterfall that was much closer to me to dig up some natural scenery materials. I came home and dumped it on the layout. No pics of this, but after the first round was dry I could see that my rocks were too grey and needed to be more earth colored. You'd think I could get it right after all this time. So I did a bunch of tan washes over the rocks right up into the "dirt". I guess the one advantage is that the dirt is right there to color match. Still much more to go.



I will wash the rest of the rock on the layout.

On Yellow Creek. A very short distance from there is a pile of rocks that was one of the first iron furnaces:


In the Bruce Springsteen song about Youngstown he talks about this furnace.

lol I just noticed on the historical marker they called them James and Daniel Eaton. Their last name was Heaton 

James also founded the city of Niles Ohio named after a friend of his and is where he built another furnace.

Started working on a new caboose. It is based on the 3' gauge Hoosac Tunnel & Wilmington caboose, but I narrowed it 6" and shortened it 42". The trucks are MDC passenger car trucks.



I love the narrow cupola 


Planning to paint it a yellow reefer color to switch things up and put black lettering on it. I was wondering if any of the graphics people could do artwork that I can print? I'd like the top curved like the original:


But it would say "MILL CREEK COAL" (curved) "&" (in the middle) COKE COMPANY (under).
