Well, this weekend at the Kitchener train show I came across a lone CPR b unit in block lettering. Granted, it is an F7b rather than an F9b, but it was numbered in the 19xx series so beggars can't be chooser. Guess I need to get to work with the detailing!

(I also found a GP7 in block lettering that happens to be from a series equipped for passenger service with a steam generator... but that can go in another build thread)

In looking at reference pictures of the actual CPR 1909, there doesn't appear to be that much detailing required other than the winterization hatch and a few other little vents and such. Does anyone know what that funnel thing is on the roof, ahead of the exhaust fans? Also, its hard to make out but does anyone know if the porthole windows are stainless or painted grey?

I don't know much about CPR F-units, so I'll just ask whether it's possible that the "funnel thing" is actually something behind the locomotive and not a part of it?

It's definitely part of the locomotive... As for what it is I'm stumped...



Perhaps Jason @rapidotrains can shed some light... The Rapido master class doesn't mention anything about this detail.

Well, that picture certainly clears that up.  Nice pic!

Interesting detail I have never noticed before... Wonder if it was CP only...

Pretty sure that is referring to the upside down hook-shaped pieces of pipe sticking out through the roof at various locations. I'm thinking the funnel may be an exhaust for the steam generator blow down, or a weird fill hatch for engine oil/coolant?

As a side note, your picture clearly shows that the portholes were indeed stainless on that unit, while other pics show them black, painted or even mixed!

As a follow up on rooftop vents and such, this is from the @rapidotrains FP9a master class:

A is the fuel tank vent and B the water tank vent. These details were included on my FP9a and FP7a, and will be included on the F7b as appropriate. The function of the funnel though is still a mystery to me...
