Not as much as you'd hope, but hopefully enough to start such a project.

Yeah, I totally get that.  I figure that I'd be lucky to cover the cost of the materials and can forget recouping any labor.  Hell, it way a labor of love anyway, so . . .

Could something like my layout get $1,000.00 or $2,000.00?  Anything less than $1,000.00 and I see no real advantage in selling it, considering I would have to buy another DCC system (the command station on the layout is probably twelve years old, so it's time to upgrade).

Maybe I could put it on eBay with a reserve price and see what happens.  Unfortunately, I will have to have a talk with my five-year-old daughter.  A few months ago, she told me not to sell my layout, because she wanted it when I was done with it.  I have no idea why my daughter would have even pondered about me getting rid of the layout.  There must have been something that I said that she overheard.

^This.  You know, I did raise some funds by liquidating a chunk of my fleet recently, which could be used to start finishing off the layout room.  How much do you think I could get for the Seaboard Central?  ;)

So I found I can make some decent coin selling pieces off piecemeal.  So far I've spend a good bundle on my foray into HOn3 all financed by selling off a few of my better locos and cars.  I think the more you try to sell at once the bigger a discount folks will expect.

@Dave Vollmer,

Agreed.  I've made approximately $1,200.00 on the sale of locomotives and rolling stock over the past several weeks on eBay.  I was shocked when a few pieces, e.g., Intermountain FP7s decorated for the Seaboard Coast Line, got me darn near 100% return on my investment after several years of ownership and enjoyment!  But, unless I decide to sell off my Seaboard System fleet (tempting since they're non-sound units), I really don't have much left to sell off piecemeal.

That leaves me with the fate of the Seaboard Central.  Honestly, the writing was on the wall and its days were numbered when I tore down the expansion one year ago.  Now, since I was so successful in converting nonessential parts of my fleet into significant cash on eBay, I'm really interested in selling off everything I can to fund the start of room construction and the new N scale and On30 layouts.  Otherwise, I've stagnated by promising myself that I cannot start a new layout until the room is finished.

I've been looking for an excuse to buy a Bachmann J, and Bachmann did produce the 1980s-era model of No. 611.  Perfect!

Thanks for the heads-up on that!  I sent a request to join the group.  That's an awesome picture on their Facebook header of a NS coal train reaching the bottom of the hill and clearing the runaway track at Melrose.

Boy, I really wish that I hadn't lost the video that we took on our 1994 Saluda railfanning trip during our move five years ago.   :(

I was talking to my wife about these plans just last night.  Patience.  It will happen.  The hesitation has been a few issues that will not be fun to deal with: (1) getting construction materials into the basement, (2) the existing electrical work, especially the lighting, that was left behind by the previous homeowners needs a lot of attention, and (3) I'd also like to move the water heater out of the layout room.

Step 1: List the Seaboard Central 2.0 for sale on eBay.  Check.
