This was the smallest of the so called rail whales. Phosphorus was the heaviest load hauled by these car, so it was the smallest.

That's beautiful work. The compound curves alone are proof your powers are complete.

I wouldn't know where to start.

What did you use to build that whale of a tank car?

Mike, Peter and John, thank you. I used a Atlas LP tank car that I cut to size for the middle section, that gave me the belly. I added a small section from a Athearn 62' tanker, that's the black part. The end section is from a old Atlas Kaolin tanker. After bonding the parts, I did a lot of sanding to blend the parts, diameter wise. The walkway is  double thick Plano parts. I used silver bearing solder to fasten the stainless parts. There are 52 solder joints on the top walkway. The seam is where the top and bottom skin are fitted together to cover the insulation. The trucks are Union Terminal Imports that were produced for their DODX tank flat. They made several extras. I almost forgot, the seam is made from strips of .005 styrene.

Thanks again, Bobby

Given that we ave all those tank cars in N, all I need is a source for trucks . . . . Any chance your HO supplier has a website?

It's HO. These trucks are brass and were made for Union Terminal Imports DODX tank flat. They had several extra trucks made to sell.

Thanks, Bobby

Not a perfect match, but it may be an acceptable stsnd-in:

[ Guests cannot view attachments ] The trucks were not available 8 years ago, so I had to cast my own. I had never done anything like this, so it was a steep learning curve.
I had to make four two part molds  and I carved the bolsters. Now days, they could be cut, that would be a lot easier! Anyhow, here's what they look like. The trucks have a 11 foot wheel base. It's a whole lot easier to buy them [ Guests cannot view attachments ] than to cast them!!!!
