Current state of the basement, i.e., Narrow Gauge Country:

Oh, and there's the "speed of light" and the "speed of sound."  In the model railroad world, there's now the "speed of Dr. Hotballz" as the benchmark.  :D

There's no drape on the layout legs.  Nothing to see here.  Still work to be done.

You're the third person today to mention that to me...  I had curtains on the Juniata Division and they closed off and darkened the room.  I don't want curtains.  I love having the space under the layout open and bright.  Part of why I painted the underside of the benchwork white was to help brighten the space.

The benchwork (save for fascia) is painted with semi-gloss white and the legs are all symmetrical specifically to give it a finished look.

I'm a no on drapes.

Supertrees.  I just paint the trunks white first before I leaf them.

I hear you on the "no drapes" decision and think that's a good call, based on your photograph.  Here's an unsolicited suggestion; we love those, right?   ;)  Would you consider painting the legs the same color as the wall below the layout or the carpeting?  That might make the legs somewhat less obvious.

That idea pooped up once before too somewhere...  It's not a bad one, but since the heavy wall brackets that support the majority of the layout--plus the Ikea cabinetry below Rico--are already semi-gloss white, I went with white for the legs.

It's odd, though, that you guys are objecting so strongly to semi-gloss white benchwork legs.  To me it's exactly how I pictured it in my head.

No f**king way I'm repainting benchwork at this stage of the game!   :D

EDIT:  I feel like the photos, particularly the way they get washed out when I upload them to TRW (they're much brighter and more vivid on Facebook) don't really convey the space well.  If you're ever along the Front Range you're welcome to experience it in person!

I do also want to reiterate...  This is a layout I've been envisioning for some 30 years from when I started my first HOn3 kit.  For three decades I've pictured this layout in my mind's eye.  I'm fortunate to have the time, resources, and skills to translate that 30-year dream into reality.

Maybe they're just jealous of all your fine modeling work?
