Finally making progress again at Ophir.  I finished the Oilton Club Saloon (the center two-story structure) which happens to be the only surviving structure from the railroad days at the Ophir Loop.  Also planning out backdrop positions.



At the base of the log retaining wall between Colorado Highway 145 and Howard Fork of the San Miguel River was a dizzying amount of debris and garbage.  Apparently during Ophir's 8 months of winter, residents found it easier to simply toss stuff over the side.  My debris pile is actually considerably thinner than the prototype.  The realigned Colorado 145 completely obliterates this scene today.

Would shipping pallets have been discarded or would they have been broken up for use as kindling or firewood?
Better yet, park a pickup truck at the top of the retaining wall with a person down at the base scavenging the pallets to use as framing material for a model train layout or modules.

I thought you guys knew me better than that!     Of course there's a photo in one of my books with what appears to be a shipping pallet lying below that very wall at Ophir around 1945.

Not likely...  There'd be three feet of snow down there by Thanksgiving!  It's a summer shot. 

One of the sources of the debris is that back when Colorado 145 was a single-lane wagon road there were structures perched on piles of cribbing there across from the depot.  When the road was widened and the retaining wall moved outward, those structures were either moved (like the Quality Store) or obliterated.  Ophir in the 1890s looked like a poster for all the things you shouldn't do on a model railroad if you want to look prototypical.  While that doesn't explain the pallets, there was a considerable amount of wood and structure debris down there too.  To that end I put a few timbers and a broken window frame to represent that past.

In the end, I like how the pallets look down there so they are staying...end of conversation.     You may model your Ophir without pallets.
