I got a new layout!
Details here: https://www.therailwire.net/forum/index.php?topic=28969.msg506394#msg506394

Just spitballing some building placement here.

Possible AR location. The scene isn't exact, but I think it will be a nice vignette that conveys the prototype. Also forgive the shed placement. I think it should go on the other side and turned sideways.

No, I said "Ed's Law."

The extent of my holiday weekend is this and its aftermath...

I have numerous projects to contend with before modeling commences but at least I am no longer an apartment dweller with no extra space, and the models and library are back out of storage.

Failing to prepare is preparing to fail.

Happy New Year 2017. Starting off the new year with a big change. After a couple of years of frustration in trying to accomplish my modeling goals in N, I have made the change to HO. The idea is to have a more manageable size layout at a higher level of detail. I will still be working on the Milwaukee Road Beer Line, but moving the location to an area known as The Snake Track. So just one engine, maybe 20 or so pieces of rolling stock, and a caboose or two. Central Valley code 70 ties and switches. The layout size is 9 by 13 feet, plus cassette or transfer table staging. Wish me luck!

Best wishes, Dave

Wow, it seems like just a couple of weeks ago, you were still trying to come to grips with VO 1000's and how to get FM units built in N Scale.  Has this been brewing (pun intended) for a while?

Just really frustrated and stalled for a couple of years with various N scale projects. Cracked one of the Shapeways shells.  Desire to have a higher level of detail and being able to see it! Like the idea of sound.  Less is more.

Best wishes, Dave

I worked on the layout a bit yesterday and today. Things ate moving along nicely on my Cajon pass. I built the first section on the lower which will be San Bernardino. It's 20" below the upper deck. I also completed the roadbed in the eastbound uphill climb from cajon to summit. I just need to finish the westbound main from pine lodge 25' up to and passed alray. It's almost time to lay some track and start scenery!

I added a track to my rolling reverse loop/staging yard cart, to add capacity to the layout- exactly eight coal hoppers.  I had to butcher an Atlas #5 turnout to fit it into the middle of the s-curve of the reverse loop.

A while back I took a Grandt Line HOn3 C&S 4 wheel caboose, narrowed it and added HOn30 trucks to it. I was gonna remove the cupola and just make it back woodsy. But I found a better idea and tore the side off and replaced with styrene and Tichy windows.

Every one knows the Mann's Creek caboose that they had in the 1950's, but early on they used these:

I have some Shapeways vents coming for the clerestory (cut up from a N scale trolley).

I resurrected this long-forgotten project and completed it this weekend - a former UP RJ Corman SD40-2 Snoot. My backyard backs up to CSX's Louisville-Cincinatti Line (LCL), and RJ Corman has trackage rights over this portion of the line. So, I see this guy and RJCC tunnel motors go by almost daily. Still need to pickup a decoder and wire the ditch lights, but it's otherwise complete.
