Me too, twice. Bought a couple SW1500's from MBK a while back when they were having a clearance sale on them to use for an SW8 and SW1200 project. The much improved wheelsets alone were worth it to me.

Can anyone comment on what to look for in a L-L donor mechanism?  I have a couple of SW1500 shells coming; is there an easy way to identify smaller flanged locomotives when I see them for sale on the big auction site?  Flange size can be hard to determine from auction photos.

Alternately, is anyone doing replacement drivers with finer flanges?

%#*^, I can't edit my post from a few minutes ago.  OK, I discovered NWSL does wheels, that's solved.  It sounds like I want a later run chassis with brass worms, right?

It's pretty easy to swap out the plastic worms for Kato brass ones. I don't have the part number off hand but it's a common Kato part. If you're looking for a factory chassis, I believe it wasn't until the recent Walthers release a couple of years ago that had brass worms.

If you have any spare Atlas wheelsets, I found this:

That is not something I would find acceptable. It seems like a Micky-Mouse solution.  I would rather turn down the Life-Like flanges with a file than fudging Atlas wheelsets like that. But I'm rather anal.  :)

Thanks, all - I have the NWSL drivers on order and am looking for a suitable donor chassis.

You also seem to have a LOT of unfinished projects. High correlation factor.

And I'm damn proud  of it (the high-quality of finished projects, not the backlog)!  Mickey-Mouse need not apply!  :D

What concerns me about the NWSL wheelsets is that they don't reference a specific locomotive...

Because those wheels should fit all China-made N scale model locos which use 40" wheels with 1.5mm half-axles.  Most manufacturers (like Kato or Atlas) produce their own wheel-sets and use the same part on multiple models they produce.  So for example most Kato's locos use the same Kato wheels or most Atlas locos use the same Atlas wheels.

Fixed ambiguous statement.

I don't think that's quite true.  The distance between the points and the wheel faces are longer on Kato axles than on Atlas.  You can swap Kato into Atlas, as people have been talking about on the SD40-2 Thread, but it causes extra friction and may not work on all models.   I would presume that the NWSL axles are designed to fit Atlas, but I don't know from direct experience.

Fixed my ambiguous sentence in the post you quoted.  NWSL specifically states that their wheels are made for Life-Like models manufactured in China. Atlas is not mentioned.  But for all we know, Atlas and Life-Like wheels could have been subcontracted to the same factory in China which makes wheels for multiple model RR producers in China.
