Another Trip Down Memory Lane

While on one of my internet excusions I saw a side add for the following book. It immediately struck a cord to my childhood so I had to get it: Bantum Books, 1950 edition of “Model Railroading”, by the editorial staff of Lionel.


I was only 4 at the time so I probably got a used copy later but this is the book that taught me about railroads: class of trains, the CNW running left-handed because it was designed by the British, building houses from shoeboxes,…

What joy it was to re-read more than a half century later. My wife asked me why I didn’t keep my original book and she couldn’t understand that all that remained was a crumbling pile of separate pages (from overuse and drooling).

It also included my all-time favorite track plan (I think you really needed magna-traction for this one).

I resumed work on the New Haven EP-3 electric.  I installed a DZ-126 controller in the new RP frame along with the revised main truck frames and pilot decks.

I'm not entirely happy with the pilot decks, as there is a slight warp upward.  I don't know if I can redesign them so that Shapeways doesn't warp them during the wax removal process, but I may try. So far though, I happy with the performance results.  I sent the body wrapper artwork to PPD for etching, so the headlight wiring will occur after I have bodies I can work with.

On the industrial side of my door layout I had this spot planned out for a culvert.


Turned into this. The small pump house building is cut from Middlesex Mfg. walls.


And then I added some pipes on the side for interest.


Question: Should I keep the pipes or scrap?

I think the pipes really make the scene.  Subtle, believable detail.

Since you are soliciting opinions, I like the pipes but not the location through a window frame. Seems like it should go through bricks.

That sounds much more impressive than just calling it a "decoder".    BUt on a serious note, this is shaping up to be a really nice model!

For the first time in a long time I vacuumed and cleaned the rails.  I also laid down a coat of No-ox on the rails- so far so good.



I've also been experimenting with oil paints for weathering.  This car came to me needing some TLC and I think it is looking not too bad now with some tags, new markings and weathering.

Rick, 15 years after you received your book, I received the third printing of the book, My is very worn and some of the pages are now missing to time. (Flip phone included for size reference)



Like you, I drooled over this book, but my favorite chapter is number 15, page 179. The story of the Bellefonte Central that served State College PA.


Sure the Mighty P company and the Central were in the book, but a little short line in central Pennsylvania. I've been fascinated by short lines ever since.
