Oral B... you can pick up a AA powered one for $12. Sonicare costs at least $60-70

On sandable primer - I think Rustoleum uses talc.

Will the jewlers rouge smooth out the hood "waves?" Or is it the idea to sand them out after priming?

Ask the guy on shapeways if he could offer it in the new, high resolution acrylic stuff. Way smoother and way easier to work with than that frosted crap.

He does offer it in the black stuff, but several others here said they had a bad time with it. That's why I went FXD.

Ok...Shapeways had 25%off with free shipping today so I popped for the black stuff. We'll see what happens with it when it gets here.

As for the FXD stuff, here is what I did. The top car was polished with Dremel polishing compound and some dremel buffing stuff. It did a good job of getting rid of the fuzz but it was not small enough to get in to all the cracks. It will need to be sanded.

The bottom car was sanded first and then primed with sandable primer. (about 5 thin coats). I hope to sand this down today. I think it's going to be clear to me that I will need to sand the waves down first on the hood.

Things I learned today:

Sand out the hood waves before priming. I would have had to lay the primer on too thick to fill in the striations.
Car #2 is getting stripped.

Car #1, however got some Tor-Red.

IS IT RED? IS IT ORANGE? NO! IT'S TOR-RED! Amazing little color. It's got a little sparkle to it, too.
So, I'm at a crossroad where I don't know what to do. Can I make this better? The paint does not look like glass. There is definitely some small orange peel to it and I don't know how to fix it.
At a distance, I think the car looks pretty good.

Without removing the paint, a little more sanding and then a final thin coat could be done.  Fills in just like primer did and might help with seeing the low spots while sanding.  Very fine (1000?) wet sand and then last coat.  That's only IF you are feeling that strongly about it.  I suspect it's pretty good as is to the naked eye.  At least my eyes.  You could always make all observers check their glasses at the door. 8)

 Honestly unless you strip and sand then sand the primer then wet sand between coats that's probably as good as you will get.

I would just leave it alone Josh. This is probably as good as it you can get the FUD/FXD material to look unless you start doing some nano-sanding (did I create a new phrase?) or micro-blasting, with multiple applications or primer.  Maybe a clear coat would smooth it out if you want to try it.

I'm surprised that the pain has sparkles. The name doesn't have "poly" in it which usually indicates a solid non-metallic or non-pearl color. Most 1:1 (or even model-specific) metallic or pearl paints have flakes which are way out-of-scale for N scale car paint.

I think that once you paint the details (windows, wheels, chrome-bits and lights) the car will look really nice.  Also, was the car in the movie dusty? You can weather it up a bit.  :)

Ok. So, since I have 2 cars and 2 more on the way, I'll let this one be and finish it as is.
@peteski I think I want to see how perfect I can take this.  Something as small as this I feel like I can manage sanding between coats.
Ever since my early days as a modeler, I've struggled with exterior glossy car bodies. I've never been able to figure it out.
What's the secret? What's the formula?
Do I get this stuff and sand between coats?

Oh, also. I don't know if I want to dust this up or not. The car didn't start out dirty. It got damaged and dirty as the film progressed.
