The difference between the NE5 and the 6 is primarily the side panels? Is there anything else of major spotting difference?

They are two distinctly different prototypes built to the same requirements.  The NE-5 is Pullman-Standard, the NE-6 is International.  The differences are too many to list.  You can compare photos of the two for reference.

The 'why not' is that every factory or modeler painted CGW NE-5 in history has had black running boards even though the clearest photo 'evidence' says that's not the case for all schemes.  The problem is there's not a smoking gun type photo to change the establishment, just a bunch up ground up shots showing the ends and corner.

Atlas will deco the CGW models properly if you supply them with documentation that backs up your assessment.

We'll know if that's true based on whether the MN&S hopper gets fixed.  That at least I can say I have "proof".  The caboose I'll just paint as I see fit and probably won't say anything if they go with the black.  I'm just glad they are making it and I don't have to spend any more money printing my shell to continual disappointment.

The only shot I posted that shows the roofwalk having any black for sure is post merger.  All the others are body color to me.   I've got several more examples I can't post that show the exact same thing, no black visible at all.  Someday a definitive shot will hopefully show up.

Anyway, I'm not trying to tell you you're not seeing color variations. I just think you're interpreting wrong.

Some have a clear demarcation. Some don't. Depends who was painting and under what deadline. What you're interpreting as maroon showing in red cabooses could certainly be red overspray on black. Or the other way around if they did the roofs last.

Think of how much work it would be to mask and paint around a mesh running board. Why would they do body color all the way? That's the part I can't rationalize.

Well my original statement was regarding all schemes just getting black running board and this conversation as become pretty focused on the final red scheme which probably will have the most variation of all.  There's a shot of 600 in the MS book in Maroon paint that leaves almost no doubt to the entire RB being body color.

To be clear, I do believe some had just red ends.  I also believe some were all black (mostly the couple that had the striped scheme before the maroon).

Here's what it generally comes down to for me.  Here's a shot of 605:



It's like you've described and like the one shot I posted.  It's pretty clear the ends are red but the rest is black.  What I see and what I put the most stock into is that the platforms are all black.  No red.  No overspray.  Black.  If I see black platforms, then I'm good.  But when the platforms are body color, my first reaction will that the running board is also body color unless there's something to show otherwise.

So a shot like this:



I don't know how anyone would think that has a black RB. 

Regardless, enough of me polluting this thread.  When these come out maybe I'll start a fresh one.  Or maybe a top down shot in good lighting of a clean caboose will finally come about... Nah, that's be too easy.

I know it doesn't hit many of you, but an NE-5 for me is as big as the FVM RIb Side caboose was for Milwaukee modelers.  The CGW had 25 of these and was the staple of the caboose fleet.  There are at least 12-15 paint schemes just between the CGW and CNW (merger).  I'm in for 5-6 undecs but will be watching the artwork closely to hopefully get things as correct as possible even though I know I'll never convince them to not paint all the CGW running boards black.

Yeah, that's at Elizabeth IL in front of an actual CGW depot.  Hopefully they can get an actual CGW caboose someday.
